MIDLAND - Norman Koonce was born on Dec. 15, 1934, in Midland to parents C.A. (Gus) Koonce and Opal Hazelwood Koonce. He died Jan. 8, 2014, in Arbor House Assisted Living and Memory Care in Granbury after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. This came after successfully beating prostate cancer, a mild stroke and West Nile virus. He fought Alzheimer’s to the bitter end. He grew up in Martin County, around Lenorah, on the family farm and graduated from Stanton High School in 1953. He ran track and was all-state. He was a member of the Methodist church. In 1957, he married Janet Williams and they raised three children. His main profession through life was a farmer and spent many years working his farm in Midland. He also served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. His other endeavors included being a “Doodlebugger” for Pan American Petroleum in Fort Stockton and a fireman for the Midland Fire Department. In addition to his farming duties he also found time to put together land deals and several oil and gas deals in and around the Permian Basin. He was also known to buy and sell an old car or truck every once in a while. For many years he was known to roam around Midland taking doughnuts to his friends, family and business associates. His grandsons would anxiously await his arrival on Saturday mornings when he brought glazed, chocolate and “sprinkle” doughnuts. Those that knew him knew he wasn’t one to sit around. He loved to travel. He took several road trips to Tennessee to visit the mountains and spent many trips with the whole family around Texas visiting family. There were also the motorcycle trips across the country, farm auctions near and far, and the often-adventurous visits to the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., in January. He loved his family dearly, especially his five grandsons, whom he made feel very special every Christmas. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Janet Koonce of Midland; one son, Gary Koonce and wife Cindy; daughter Janna Koonce Quattlebaum and husband Robert; five grandsons, Byron Koonce, Phillip Koonce, Cole Quattlebaum, Blake Quattlebaum and Gentry Quattlebaum, all of Midland; brother Louie Koonce and wife Evelyn of San Angelo; brother Jerry Koonce and wife Debbie of Midland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
