Kenneth Ray Large

MIDLAND - Kenneth (Ken) Ray Large died July 16, 2014, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 14, 1932, to Obie and Cora Large in Leakey. He graduated from Knott High School and went straight into the United States Air Force, serving as a military policeman for 10 years. After being stationed for three years at Fairford Royal Air Force Base near Cheltenham, UK, he returned back to his roots in Texas, where he served at both Webb and Lackland Air Force bases. After leaving the Air Force, he tried his hand at various jobs and settled on being an engineering assistant at Cap Rock electric for 20 years. He was passionate about chili. A member of Chili Appreciation Society International, he was instrumental in developing what is now known as “The Ranch”. In 1989, in the heat of Texas summer, he volunteered his time digging trenches and laying wire to what would become the main stage at The Ranch in Terlingua with his close friends. Very well respected and a fierce competitor, he served at several different post within the organization, including director. He was preceded in death by his parents, Obie and Cora Large of Big Spring; his sister, Helen Large Thrailkill of Stanton; Niece Fran Scott of Midland, third wife Barbara Large of Odessa and daughter Kimberly Large Carnes of Midland. Survivors include his four sons; Kyle Large and wife Kristina of Fort Worth; Kevin Large of Carleon, Wales; Cody Large and girlfriend Debbie of Midland; Drew Large and wife Angie of Midland; first wife, Hazel Burgess of Midland; second wife Dorothy Large of Midland; step-son and step-daughter Doug and Develan Doss; niece Pat High of Stanton; five grandchildren, Kurt and Scott Large of Carleon, Wales, UK; Rian Large and wife Cassie of Midland; Kayleigh Humphries-Large of Midland; Harriet Large of the UK; and two great-grandchildren Hazel and Londyn.
