Elbert Carby

BIG SPRING - Elbert Carby, 88 of Big Spring, died Nov. 15, 2016,at the VAMC. Graveside service with Naval Honors were Nov. 18 at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton with Doug Shelley, pastor of East Side Baptist Church, officiating. He was born Feb. 11, 1928, in Lewis, AR to Florence Moore Carby and Ike Carby. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was aboard the USS Sargent Bay, USS Tripoli and USS Lake Champlain in the Pacific. He received the following medals: Victory World War II; Asiatic Pacific Area and American Area. He married Lida Florene Kemp on June 24, 1949. She preceded him in death on August 15, 2004. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone after 40 years of service. He came to Big Spring 26 years ago from Clovis, New Mexico. He was a Methodist. He is survived by one son: Gerald Carby of Farwell; eight grandchildren: Bruce Allan Carby, Jr. of Stanton, David Carby of Midland, Matthew Murphree of Albuquerque, NM, Alison Murphree and Samuel Murphree both of Big Spring, Terry Carby of Hurlburt AFB, FL, Christopher Carby of Fort Carson, CO and Elias Kinney of Clovis, NM and 15 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three children: Edna Carby, Bruce Carby and Janice Carby along with 10 brothers and sisters.
