MIDLAND - Harriett Higgins was born to R.S. and Esther Higgins on July 9, 1934 in El Paso and died Sept. 2, 2017. The family moved to Martin County in 1945. She graduated from Stanton High School in 1952. She attended the Hotel Dieu Hospital School of Nursing in 1955, received her bachelor's degree in nursing from the Marillac College in 1960, and was a part of the first class of Family Nurse Practitioners at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. She was a member of the Daughters of Charity from 1955 to 1983 and served in their hospitals and clinics in Texas, Missouri, Tennessee and in Japan for six years. She returned to Midland in 1983 where she worked as an FNP for the Midland Family Physicians and at Midland Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 2001. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister Betty Marie, brother R.S. Higgins, Jr. and two nephews. She is survived by her goddaughter and family, LeAnn and Bob Weidner and their children Matthew, Susan, Bobby and Michael; her "adopted family" Karen and Bill Childers, Jr. and daughters Hailey and Ali, and by three nieces and two nephews. She requested that her Catholic friends pray a rosary for her intention at their convenience. Rosary was Sep. 6. Funeral mass was at St. Ann's Catholic Church Sep. 7. Burial followed at Resthaven Memorial Park.
