SAN ANTONIO - Alta Mae Straub Cook, 85 of San Antonio, died Oct.17, 2017. She was born Dec. 6, 1931, in Abilene to the late Mason D. and Lillian Belle Coggin. She was a longtime resident of Stanton and graduated from Stanton High School in 1950. She married Claude W. Straub of Stanton that same year. She spent most of her working career in the employment of Martin County working in the Sheriff’s department and later in the County Treasurer’s Department. She attended First United Methodist Church while living in Stanton. Several years after the death of Claude Straub she married Eddie C. Cook, a Stanton resident and local farmer. They spent many evenings checking the irrigation pivot systems, visiting, going out to eat and playing cards with family and friends. On more than one occasion they were asked why it took so long to check the irrigation pivots…. She and Eddie were never able to give a good answer to that one! After Eddie’s death in 2003 she moved to Manor Park Retirement Center in Midland where she enjoyed visiting and card playing with the other residents. She lived in San Antonio the last few years of her life so she could be located closer to family. She is survived by two sons and their wives Claude W. Straub, Jr. and wife Jillene and William C. Straub and wife Terry; two stepsons Kenneth Cook and wife Cheryl and Kyle Cook; eight grandchildren Craig, Clint, Jason and Seth Straub, Keith, Karen, Kevin and Kayla Cook and their respective spouses and significant others; ten great-grandchildren between the Straub and Cook families and her sister Evelyn Hogue and her husband Pete. Graveside funeral services will be at Evergreen Cemetery Chapel in Stanton at 2 p.m. on Oct. 21. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Alta’s name to either the Alzheimer’s Association of Midland, 4400 N. Big Spring St., Suite C-32, Midland, Texas 79705 or First United Methodist Church of Stanton, P.O. Box 1193, Stanton, Texas 79782. Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbreath Funeral Home, Stanton. Online condolences may be made at
