Old Settler’s Reunion activities being sought for schedule of events

MARTIN COUNTY - It’s just over a month away - Old Settler’s Reunion for Martin County will be on July 9 this year and class members and groups planning reunions are urged to begin calling Julie Snellgrove at 432-413-9577 to get on the reunion agenda. Activities will again center around those class reunions, the parade on the morning of July 9 and the barbecue and dance later that day.

Hopkins, Church to receive state music award

Stanton High School students Kirsten Church and Sarah Hopkins were honored as Texas Music Scholars at a ceremony on May 9. Church is a freshman and plays bass trombone and Hopkins is a junior and plass Bb Clarinet The pair were nominated for this honor by their director, Stazie Church, and the award is given by the Texas Music Educators Association, which sponsors the Texas All-State Bands, Orchestras and Choirs. Last year fewer than 2,300 students were named as Texas Music Scholars.

May 30 is Memorial Day

You could visit the cemetery, place small flags or red flowers on the graves, wear a red poppy, visit a memorial, fly the flag at half-mast till noon, or pause at 3 p.m. for a moment of mediation and reflection for those who have died while serving our country. It was declared a national holiday in 1971 and is on the last day of May.

Horelka, Shands to marry June 18

INEZ - Calvin and Georgia Horelka of Inez, announce the engagement of their daughter Hallie Horelka to Lane Shands, the son of Danny and Michelle Peugh of Lenorah. The bride-elect is a 2010 graduate of Texas State University in San Marcos with a bachelor of science in agriculture with an emphasis in animal science.

The Stanton eighth grade band earned its fifth consecutive sweepstakes award at contest in Odessa on April 14. The band is led by Jennifer Condon, who has the junior high Buffs winning all five of the consecutive sweepstakes.

Stanton High School junior Colby Gordon won the informative speaking contest at the Region 1 meet at ACU in Abilene. He took first place unanimously as the best of 24 students in the region, and goes to state next.

Garland, Powell plan summer wedding

MAGNOLIA - Jim and Cindy Fogal of Cypress, and Toy and Lori Garland of Houston would like to announce the engagement of their daughter, Michelle Garland, to Joshua Aaron Powell, son of Boyce and Rita Powell of Stanton. The future bride will receive her degree in business management from Blinn College in Bryan, December of 2016.

Reception April 29 for county employee

A retirement reception has been scheduled for Israel Garanzuay who is retiring after almost nine years with Martin County. The reception will be at 3 pm, April 29 in the Martin County Courthouse.
