Allen named Commended Student for 2015

STANTON - Stanton High School Principal Mark Cotton announced that 2015 senior Sterling Michael Allen has been named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation for the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will be presented by the principal to the talented senior.

TARZAN - Eldon and Georgia Welch of Tarzan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 18, 2014. On Nov. 30, a family lunch and party was hosted by the couples children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to honor the many years of love they have shared.

Elbow fifth grader wins calendar contest

STANTON – Recently the Permian Basin Underground Water Conservation District invited the fourth and fifth graders from the local schools within the district to participate in an art calendar contest. The students were given a presentation by the district’s staff informing them of the importance of water conservation and giving them tips on how they could pitch in to help save water.

Martin County judge to retire after 16 years

STANTON - Corky is going to retire! Charles “Corky” Blocker, who has served as the Martin County judge, will be out of a job on January 1, 2015. He elected to not run for a fifth term. “ Well, shucks!” just about everybody says. Corky Blocker has had the title for 16 years, serving four terms, succeeding Bob Deavenport in January of 1998.

Sierra Madera explodes into existence

SIERRA MADERA - The sight must have been a spectacular one. While estimates vary, sometime around 100 million years ago, the skies above what would later become the dry desert grasslands between Fort Stockton and Marathon glowed in a brilliant light. Some scientist say that it was a comet while others say it might have been a meteor but either way, something big slammed into the earth and created a enormous scar on the landscape. Estimates say the object was as big as a football field.
