HENDRICKSON

The Stanton High School band sent two soloists and one Ensemble to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble contest at Hendrickson High School near Austin on May 28. The kids performed successfully in front of college professors and came home with Division Ones and Twos. The saxophone quartet pictured above- Sebastian DeLeon, A.J. Silva, Luis Brisceno and Noah Hamilton

Members of the Martin County Historic Convent Board

Members of the Martin County Historic Convent Board have been meeting with an archaeologist and other professionals about possible digs to be done on the site of the convent in Stanton. At issue is whether or not to continue searching for some of the buildings and artifacts likely lost years ago in weather events.

Just call him DOCTOR Geoffrey Schuette

FT. LEAVENWORTH, KAN. - Grady grad Geoffrey Schuette has been a busy boy since he completed his high school career in Grady back in 2009.

For starters - it’s Dr. Geoffrey H. Schuette - heavy on the DR.

The son of Terry and Deneice Schuette who now live in Blackwell, Geoffrey just keeps piling up the honors.

An avid member of the Grady FFA who had many and varied interests while a Wildcat, Schuette in particular was attracted to math.

Stanton native Salgado releases cumbia hip hop album

CORPUS CHRISTI - Johnny Salgado, former Stanton resident and Stanton High School graduate, continues to work with some of the biggest names in the music industry as he climbs the hip hop charts.

Salgado spent last summer in Hollywood recording tracks with a multi-platinum producer on the Billboard charts and his success looks to continue as he just recently collaborated on some new music with Grammy Award winning producer AB Quintanilla.

Grady’s Gibson captures third state title

COLLEGE STATION - Grady’s Dominic Gibson turned in three sterling performances over two days at the George Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station to win a third gold medal and earn a place in the history books. With the win, the Grady senior joined a very small and elite group of athletes that have claimed three boys singles state championships. Ralph Sandell of Pyote, Nueces Canyon’s Swift Canyon, Colter Williams of Rotan, and Mason’s Matt Banner are the only other players in UIL history to win three titles in the state’s smallest classification.

Inman finishes fifth at state UIL

AUSTIN - Kayli Inman, a senior at Stanton High School, made the finals at the UIL State Speech Meet in Austin this week. She placed fifth in the final round of Prose Interpretation. She is the daughter of Kelly and Keri Inman. Gabrielle Vanderveen also participated in the UIL state speech meet as a member of the State Speech Honor Crew

 

. The honor crew is designed for exemplary and outstanding speech students who are not participating in the state meet. Students are nominated by their UIL speech coach, based on academic and competitive excellence in their speech and debate program. Vanderveen, a senior, is the daughter of John and Kristie Vanderveen.

Texas Rural Education

Macie Stack, Grady third grader, won second place in a statewide art contest from the Texas Rural Education Association. Dr. Amy Jacobs, Coahoma ISD superintendent and officer with the TREA, came to Grady to present her with a plaque and cash prize.

Silva to compete at State UIL meet this weekend

STANTON - Alexis Silva of Stanton heads to Austin this week to compete in Headline Writing. The State UIL Academic Meet is May 4-5, on the UT campus. Teresa Griffin is her journalism coach. Students are signing a “Good Luck” poster to send with her to Austin. Alexis is the daughter of Domingo and Vanessa Silva.

Big Spring nursery experts to present water savings plan

MARTIN COUNTY - Area residents are invited to come learn about water thrifty landscaping at the 2018 Permian Basin Underground Water District Rainwater Harvesting Workshop.

The presentation is free to the public and will be May 3 from 6-7 pm at the district’s office at 708 W. St. Peter Street in Stanton.

This year the guest speakers will be Carl and Terri Johansen, owners of Johansen Landscape and Nursery. There will be a door prize drawing for a rain barrel and rain chain giveaway.
