Karla Canada retires in Stanton on Jan. 7

MARTIN COUNTY - Karla Canada will be retiring from the Martin County Extension office this month. Her last day will be Jan. 7. There will be a retirement party for her Jan. 3 at the Martin County Senior Center from 3-5 p.m. At presstime there has been no announcement for who might be replacing Canada, who has been with the office many years. For more information call the Extension office at 756-3316.

Greenwood ropers Rodney Holloms and Tallian Thompson

Greenwood ropers Rodney Holloms and Tallian Thompson, both well known in Martin County, caught one this weekend that was worth a pretty good chunk of change. The duo won the World Series of Team Roping in Las Vegas, Nev., and brought home a check for $250,000 for their efforts. Martin County ropers Rusty O’Donnell and Kenny Stewart also had a pretty salty week in Sin City, both bring home checks for their work.

Stanton math teacher to be inducted into Angelo State Athletic Hall of Fame

SAN ANGELO - Former Angelo State and San Angelo College athletes Gail Allison Bullard of Stanton, Tranell Hawkins, Benjamin Kelly and Claudia Lopez and former athletic director and volleyball coach Kathleen Brasfield have been selected for induction into ASU’s Athletic Hall of Honor in January. The five member class is the sixth class to enter the hall, which was established in 2004. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Jan. 11 in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center. The Class of 2014 will also be introduced during halftime of the women’s basketball game.

Grady hosts zone elementary and junior high academic meet

GRADY - Grady was the host of a two day meet on November 11 and 12 where students in kindergarten through 8th grades competed in oral contests before judges, 2nd through 8th wrote papers, and grades 3rd 
through 8th tested on academic skills. Zone 3 consists of Grady, Borden County, Klondike, Midland Academy, O’Donnell, and Sands.

Crazy Uncle Eddie was a hit last week with kids young and old in Stanton, many of whom ran from the scene while others urged the goofy looking character to consider filing for office in Martin County.

Grady, Garden City crack top 10

WEST TEXAS - The Grady Wildcats varsity girl’s basketball team is already making noise in the coaching ranks across Texas. The Texas Girls Coaches Association released their pre-season ranking this past week and named the Wildcats the 10th best team in the state for Class A Division II.

Housing authority clients to sleep at ease

STANTON - This week, the Stanton Housing Authority celebrates the latest donation of $272,247 worth of brand new, high quality Tempur-Pedic mattresses that were delivered Oct. 10 for the Sweet Dreams Mattress Exchange. Local partners, including Wheeler Motor Company, Franklin and Son and the Martin County Community Fund and volunteers and employees who unloaded an entire truckload of the mattresses.
