Foundation announces newly-established Mashburn Legacy Scholarship for Stanton High School graduates

Permian Basin Area Foundation is honored to announce the establishment of the Mashburn Legacy Scholarship Fund. Created by the estates of Dorothy and Jimmie Mashburn, this is the second of two Mashburn scholarships established at the Foundation for Stanton High School (SHS) graduates.

The Stanton High School cross-examination

The Stanton High School cross-examination debaters participated in the district contest in Denver City on Feb. 5. The team of junior Nathan Garlington and junior Josh Quaid placed third. The seniors, Austin Bird and Kevin Klein, finished fourth in the competition while freshmen Colby Gordon and Sarah Hopkins placed fifth at the contest

Stanton to participate in national Google Doodle campaign

Students from Stanton High School have been invited to participate in the annual Google Doodle Scholarship Competition. Students from all over  the country will be submitting their Google Doodles in hopes of winning a  $30,000 scholarship as well as a $50,000 technology grant for their school

Newman wins Fort Worth grand champ

FORT WORTH - Flint Newman, a 4-H member from Martin County, exhibited the grand champion steer at the 2014 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Feb. 7 Newman, a senior at Stanton High School, won the steer show that is considered one of the toughest in the nation. He received $200,000 in the auction Saturday.

Army Major Nekita D. Hunter of Lamesa is State of the Union guest

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Army Major Nekita D. Hunter, a San Antonio native, was the guest of U.S. Representative Pete P. Gallego (D-Alpine) for the 2014 State of the Union tonight. “I thank Major Hunter for accepting my invitation to be my guest at the State of the Union,” U.S. Rep. Gallego said. “Major Hunter is a fellow Texan, went to high school in Lamesa in West Texas, and is now stationed in the Washington, D.C.-area.

Members of the Stanton High School band auditioned

Members of the Stanton High School band auditioned before a panel of judges in Monahans on Dec. 9 for a spot in the all-region band. Buffalo band memeber Danielle Lopez, Sterling Allen and Valerie Villa earned chairs in the Symphonic Band while Anna Porter and Skyler Church earned chairs in the Honor Band.

Hunt, Brantley exchange vows in Big Spring ceremony

BIG SPRING - Ryan Brantley of Stanton and Chelsey Hunt of Tarzan were joined in marriage on Nov. 29, 2013, at 4 p.m. at the 14th and Main Church of Christ in Big Spring. Jeremy Sigle of Tarzan’s Church of Christ officiated the wedding ceremony. Brantley is the son of Robert and Susan Brantley of Whitney, formally of Stanton, and the grandson of John and Syndi Calhoun and Dixie Brantley all of Midland.

Karla Canada retires in Stanton on Jan. 7

MARTIN COUNTY - Karla Canada will be retiring from the Martin County Extension office this month. Her last day will be Jan. 7. There will be a retirement party for her Jan. 3 at the Martin County Senior Center from 3-5 p.m. At presstime there has been no announcement for who might be replacing Canada, who has been with the office many years. For more information call the Extension office at 756-3316.

Greenwood ropers Rodney Holloms and Tallian Thompson

Greenwood ropers Rodney Holloms and Tallian Thompson, both well known in Martin County, caught one this weekend that was worth a pretty good chunk of change. The duo won the World Series of Team Roping in Las Vegas, Nev., and brought home a check for $250,000 for their efforts. Martin County ropers Rusty O’Donnell and Kenny Stewart also had a pretty salty week in Sin City, both bring home checks for their work.
