Rankin Kiker competed in the Tall City Youth Horse Club

Stanton student Rankin Kiker competed in the Tall City Youth Horse Club this past summer. Junior rodeos took place in Odessa at the West Texas Horse Center. Kiker competed in Tie Down Calf Roping, Breakaway Calf Roping, Ribbon Calf Roping, and Steer Stopping.

The boat races

A group of ladies takes to the “lakes” at the harvest festival, competing in the boat races. Kids have the lighted Christmas parade and more booths and fun on Dec. 1 in Stanton.

Cook, Nichols plan Nov. 19 wedding

STANTON - Kayla Cook of Stanton and Steven Nichols of Big Spring will exchange wedding vows Nov. 19, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church of Stanton. The bride-elect is the daughter of Charlotte Cook of Stanton and Kyle Cook of Breckenridge. She is the granddaughter of Jim and Bonnie Trimble of Stanton and the late Eddie and Nelwayne Cook of Stanton.

Stanton students take part in See You at the Pole

STANTON - The Stanton High School flag pole was surrounded by over 40 students on Wednesday morning as they took part in a national morning of prayer. See You at the Pole™, the global day of student prayer, began in 1990 as a grass roots movement with ten students praying at their school. Twenty years later, millions pray on their campuses on the fourth Wednesday in September.

Martin County Hospital District’s “Swing Bed Team” honored by TORCH with 10th Leadership Culture Award

AUSTIN — The Texas Organization of Rural and Community Hospitals, known as TORCH, announced the Martin County Hospital Swing Bed Team is the recipient of the Leadership Culture Award at the 10th Annual TORCH Leadership and Management Institute Awards. “The team has blossomed over the years from treating basic non-complex wounds to healing very complex wounds and conditions that are normally seen in much larger facilities,” said David Pearson, president and CEO of TORCH. “But more than their hard work and clinical quality, it is also the team work that makes them special. TORCH is proud to have the opportunity to recognize their accomplishments and put the spotlight on this team for their hard work and dedication to rural health.”

New idea could help with lack of quality pre-K program

AUSTIN – The Texas Workforce Commission and the Texas Education Agency have announced a new prekindergarten planning and implementation grant that will provide school districts with additional capacity to expand quality prekindergarten programs. Through this Prekindergarten Partnership Grant, 4-star Texas Rising Star child care providers are eligible to partner with their local independent school districts and charter schools to provide prekindergarten to 3- and 4-yearold children. By partnering with private prekindergarten providers that have demonstrated exemplary performance standards by achieving the highest level TRS quality rating, school systems will have an avenue to provide high quality early childhood education to more Texas children.

Permian Basin Fair

At the Permian Basin Fair three scholarships were awarded in the Creative Arts Division totaling $4,000. Shelby McDaniel of Stanton received one for $2,000. She was so excited and is planning on attending Odessa College which will match that $2,000 from the fair.

Martin County 4H honors law enforcement

Seventy- one people attended the Martin County 4-H Achievement Banquet and Ice Cream Freeze-Off fundraiser Aug. 30. 4-H members were recognized with project completion certificates and year pins, as well as ribbons from recent contests. The Friend of 4-H award was presented to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Stanton Police Department, the Silver Spur award was given to Mandy Newman, and the Outstanding Leader award was given to Christina Day.
