Students from the Stanton FFA, Grady FFA and Martin County 4- H gathered at the county livestock barn Saturday to give the whole area a good cleaning. Both ag teachers, the county agent and a bunch of parents helped out, getting the barn ready for the county show in January.

MARTIN COUNTY - Flush - that’s what Martin County is right now - in tall cotton, cuttin’ a fat hog, hitting the jackpot, on a roll . . . Pick whatever cliche fits, but the bottom line, so to speak, is taxing entities in Martin County never had it so good. And while the energy dollars are flowing, many in the community are urging their elected officials to take advantage of those big bucks now while they are available

Good news for Martin County: I-20 to open early

MARTIN/HOWARD COUNTIES - Good news came early Thursday when the Texas Department of Transportation announced eastbound lanes were open on the interstate around noon and westbound lanes could be open as early as Thursday evening. Traffic from the interstate has glutted many roads in Martin County, with all of the trucks, buses and cars detoured off the major artery and right through Martin County.

GRADY - School trustees will meet next week to canvass returns from the Nov. 5 school board election which was won by recent Grady High School graduate Alfredo Ramirez. A 2011 graduate of GHS, Ramirez is a first-time candidate and received eight votes in the District 2 election.

Filing period opens Nov. 9 for Martin County offices

MARTIN COUNTY - Some of the names are already known - and some others are expected to announce their candidacies in coming weeks. Either way the filing period opens Saturday in Martin County and all across Texas for those candidates to file. The filing period continues until 6 p.m., Dec. 9, which is a Monday. Primaries in both the Republican and Democratic parties are on March 4, 2014, with the general election this time next year, the first Tuesday in November. The filing period, which has been moved several times in recent years, is set at Nov. 9 through Dec. 9. Applications to file and lists of the filing fees are available from both the Republican Party Chair, John Campbell of Tarzan, and the Democratic Party Chair, Delton Costlow of Stanton.

UT study suggests CO2 injection caused quakes at Snyder

SNYDER - A recent University of Texas study suggests a series of small earthquakes near Snyder between 2006 and 2011 were caused by the underground injection of large volumes of gas, primarily carbon dioxide. Although the study suggests that underground injection of gas triggered the Snyder earthquakes, it also points out that similar rates of injections have not triggered comparable quakes in other fields, bolstering the idea that underground gas injection does not cause significant seismic events in most geologic settings.
