End of an era for Martin County EMS volunteers

STANTON - Martin County Volunteer Emergency Medical Service celebrated the end of an era Tuesday night in Stanton at the Martin County Community Center.

Over 20 of the volunteers associated with the EMS volunteers from Martin County over the years met to enjoy a catered meal and to reminisce.

The Stanton High School Best Band

The Stanton High School Best Band “Herd,” under the direction of Stazie Church and Jennifer Condon, earned its sixth consecutive Sweepstakes award at Concert and Sight Reading contest in Crane Wednesday. The band earned a Division ONE rating in marching, concert and sight reading.

Montez named city manager

STANTON - City councilmen moved swiftly this week, naming longtime city employee Jessie Montez the new Stanton City Manager Tuesday night

Montez, who has over 14 years experience with the city, took over immediately. He’s get some help for the short term from former City Manager and current Councilman Danny Fryar who has agreed to help with the transition.

Last week, Michael Adams resigned after a lengthy executive session in council quarters.

Dominic dominates again - headed back to state

SAN ANGELO - Grady junior Dominic Gibson, the reigning Class A state singles tennis champion, breezed through the Region II championships this week and is headed back to the state meet.

The defending 2016 state champion won the 2017 Region II Boys Singles Tennis crown played at Bentwood Country Club Tuesday and Wednesday.

In the first round he beat Elvis Tarango of Valentine 6-0,6-0, then defeated Riley Lewis of Borden County 6-1, 6-0.

Tong thrashing gets woman trip to county jail

MARTIN COUNTY - It must have been something he said. Or maybe, something he didn’t say. Either way, he was in big trouble in a hurry this past week over in Chickenfighterville - that part of Martin County that unfortunately for sheriff’s deputies is too close to Midland and too far from Stanton.

The upshot of the battle in the kitchen was the arrest of Ginger Parum, a 35-year-old woman who used kitchen tongs to thrash the man in her life - using the utensil so well that officers decided she needed a little down time in the Martin County Jail. Parum has since bonded out on domestic abuse charges and is back in Chickenfighterville awaiting the bell for the next round.

Martin County will send four scholars

Martin County will send four scholars to the UIL State Academic Meet in Austin after regional victories. For Class A Grady, freshmen Cristina Dyck was the regional silver medalist in editorial writing and Haydn Burge was bronze medalist in prose interpretation.

Stanton bakery finds a sweet spot at the ballpark

STANTON – When life gives you lemons . . . you make, well what, cupcakes? Stanton’s Domingo and Vanessa Silva had fallen on hard times a year or so ago when he was let go from his longtime job. With the only income for the Silva household now Vanessa’s at-home baking business, the couple knew it was time to do something drastic and change their family’s future, hopefully for the better.

The two set out to make Vanessa’s dream of owning her own bakery come true, and after the Martin County Economic Development Committee saw promise in her ideas, the two set off renovating an old downtown Stanton barber shop into an upscale bakery

Anniversary of WWI focus of new exhibit opening at museum

STANTON-April 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I.

In conjunction with this centennial event, Martin County Historical Museum will present an expanded World War I exhibit which can be viewed throughout the month of April.

Items on display include personal artifacts of Martin County veterans, military memorabilia, photographs, uniforms, books and maps.

Two men sought for an alleged sexual assault

DAWSON COUNTY - Two suspects are being sought in Dawson County for an alleged sexual assault and Martin County Sheriff’s Department officers are warning Martin County residents to be on the lookout for a white van with caution stripes on the back and the two suspects.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Jose Guadalupe Pena, 36 of Brownsville, according to Dawson County Chief Deputy Josh Peterson.
