David Chandler of Stanton got a shot of yet another haboob rolling the dirt and sand through Martin County this week. The weather, both wind and rain, has worked against Martin County farmers who have been fighting the conditions to get a cotton crop in the ground - a crop that might, with any luck, STAY in the ground.

A half century ago, opening scenes of Academy Award winner filmed here

Article Image Alt Text

Editor’sNote: The following story appeared in London’s Guardian , recalling the opening of one of the first R (and for a while X) rated films - one that was filmed 50 years ago, with the opening scenes in Big Spring and Stanton.

A number of the scenes shot in Stanton were not included in the final picture, but the filming here created more than a small stir.

It was a film that won the Academy Award for best picture and featured two young stars-to-be in Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. A few area residents may remember all of the excitement about the film - which seems quite tame by today’s standards.

STANTON - Midnight Cowboy was the first and only X-rated film to win the Academy Award for best picture, a fact that’s useful to know on trivia night, but otherwise needs to be appended by about five or six asterisks.

Latest telephone scam wants your Social Security #

Article Image Alt Text

MARTIN COUNTY - There seems to be no shortage of scams and ripoffs floating around this part of Texas.

The latest is a telephone scam where an official-sounding “government” spokesperson tells area residents their Social Security numbers have been changed, altered or in some way deleted and that if they’ll verify their SS # then his office will get it back into the system.

“These kinds of scams just keep coming around,” said Martin County Sheriff Brad Ingram. “Everyone needs to understand they should NEVER under any circumstances give out their private information over the telephone to a total stranger. Hang up and call law enforcement.”
