Fryar retains council seat with 86-75 win Saturday

STANTON - Longtime incumbent Danny Fryar won another two-year term on the Stanton City Council - and is now approaching a half century with the city.

Fryar, who has served as a city councilman, mayor and city manager, carried the atlarge election Saturday with 53 percent of the vote.

His opponent, Keith Cook, won the election day county 30-21, but in the overall, Fryar received the advantage by carrying early voting 65-45.

Early voting finds a new gear prior to May 4 election

STANTON - Early voters had trickled in for the first week of the early balloting period, but this week, voters got with the program.

Elections Administrator Helen Floyd said Thursday a total of 110 voters had cast ballots this week ahead of election day this Saturday.

Simpson, Grady quartet punch tickets to Austin

ABILENE - Stanton senior Devan Simpson saved some of his best for the finals Saturday and bought himself a ticket to Austin with a strong second place finish in the 110 meters hurdles.

Simpson led the Stanton team at the Class AAA Region II meet at Abilene Christian University. He’ll run next at 6:40, May 10 at the University of Texas Myers Track Complex.

He qualified with a 14.73, his personal best. Other Buffaloes competing were Payden North, fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.87 to qualify for the finals. She also competed in the 300 Meter Hurdles where she placed ninth crossing the finish line in 47.85.

Fixin’ to Happen

Back the Badge here May 15

at the hospital

STANTON - Martin County Hospital District is hosting its Third Annual Back the Badge event for all first responders from the state, county and city level.

This year, the hospital will be selling t-shirts for $20 and hats for $18 with all proceeds matched by MCHD and split between the Martin County Sheriff’s Department and the Stanton City Police Department.

New exhibit at historical museum on fashions of the 1940s a must-see

MARTIN COUNTY - A new exhibit has opened at Martin County Historical Museum and the latest display is called “Fashions of the 1940s” and features dresses, accessories, photos and other items highlighting popular culture during that important decade in American history.

Among the pieces on display are two beautiful wedding gowns worn by local women when they married their soldier sweethearts after World War II.

Helen Ruth Range wore a long satin dress with a hoop skirt when she married Tull Ray Louder on Dec. 22, 1945.

Early voting in city council election slow

STANTON - Early voting in the only contested race in Martin County is off to a crawl with only 31 voters as of presstime Thursday having bothered to cast a ballot.

The early voting period started Apr. 22 and will run through next Tuesday, Apr. 30.

At stake is one seat on the Stanton City Council. Election day is on May 4, the Saturday after the early voting period.

Water levels on the rise study shows

MARTIN COUNTY - It’s not clear just what all the implications are - but the annual study of average water level measurements shows a slight increase for Martin and Howard counties.

That’s good news considering many worry about water levels continuing to drop as drought comes and goes and meanwhile the use of groundwater for both the oilfield and for farming seems to be more in demand every year.
