TDA announces Boll Weevil eradication successes

WEST TEXAS - Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller recently announced an update to the status in the fight against boll weevils in Texas. Commissioner Miller is excited to report the West Texas Maintenance Area has been declared eradicated, and the Northern Backlands, Southern Backlands, Upper Coastal Bend and South Texas Winter Garden zones have been deemed functionally eradicated. Texas ranks No. 1 nationally for cotton production, and this announcement comes as a milestone in the efforts to eliminate the boll weevil from Texas.

Pumpkin picking fun Oct. 4 downtown

STANTON - A “Taste Of Grace Christmas Banquet” is being planned for Dec. 15, at the Martin County Community Center in Stanton. A Pumpkin Patch Extravaganza fundraiser took place Sep. 28 to help fund the banquet. It was such a huge success that another Pumpkin Patch Extravaganza has been scheduled for Oct. 4 from 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. at the Downtown Memorial Park in Stanton.

Big winds

Big winds either a microburst or a small tornado blew through Stanton Friday evening, ripping up roofs, trees and scattering dumpsters, outdoor furniture, trampolines like this one and other items all over parts of Stanton, mainly near the elementary school.

Pot Luck Supper is free on Sep. 29

STANTON - Every once in awhile the Stanton’s Senior Citizens Center offers a special evening meal. Members call it a “Pot Luck Supper.” It all happens on Tuesday, Sep. 29, at 6 pm, and it’s FREE. Sally Poteet, the capable director of the center, freezes some leftovers, carefully preserving the items and saves all to cook up the big feast.

Community’s chance to say thanks comes on Sep. 26

MARTIN COUNTY - It’s almost 20 minutes after 3 am when Bryan Creech’s pager goes off. As he rummages through the closet trying to find some warmer stuff to wear  quietly so Tasha and the baby can sleep he can hear the wind howling outside. The blue norther that roared through the Panhandle and across the Cap Rock last night sounds every bit as bad as the weatherman said it might.
