First graders

Former Texas Ranger surrenders after standoff near courthouse

 STANTON - A former Texas Ranger and DPS trooper was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with three counts after a standoff in the middle of the street next to the Martin County Courthouse. Curtis Becker of Stanton was arrested without incident by officers from the Stanton Police Department and the Martin County Sheriff’s Department af- AUSTIN - Tom Craddick has every right to be upset. The Midland state representative  who represents Martin  County was slapped down for a  third time - again by his own party  - in his efforts to get something  done about the dangers of texting  and driving.  His bill to ban texting and  driving died in the Texas Senate  this past week, despite having the  overwhelming support of law enter  lawmen blocked off streets at  both Carpenter and School Road.

Too wet to plow . . .

MARTIN COUNTY - Too wet to plow - bad for farmers trying to get cotton crops in the ground with early June deadlines looming, but good for lots of other folks - namely anyone who likes to fish or drink a class of water or take a shower. May’s heavy and frequent rains have made up for much of the hot and dry weather Martin County and West Texas have been experiencing for the better part of a decade.

Tractor Trailer

A tractor trailer t-boned this car Tuesday near Stripes in Stanton. The driver was airlifted first to Midland and then Lubbock where she is still critical, while a passenger was also listed as critical in the Midland hospital. No names were released.

Martin County ceremonies

MARTIN COUNTY - A totalof 73 Martin County students are scheduled to receive their high school diplomas this weekend. At Stanton High School, 52 students comprise the Class of 2015, which will walk across the stage Friday evening at ceremonies scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Then on Saturday evening, at 6 p.m., Grady High School willgrant diplomas to 21 members of the GHS Class of 2015. Honor graduates at each of the high schools are Stanton Valedictorian Skyler Church and Salutatorian Sterling Allen.

Just one of five or six tank batteries around the area that has been hit by lightning in the past week as the weather continues to keep volunteer firefighters busy and farmers, for the most part, out of the fields.

Sheriffs group, military personnel explain more about Jade Helm

AUSTIN - The Sheriffs’ Association of Texas Board of Directors met with officials from U.S. Army Special Operations Command on May 6, during the Association’s Board meeting in Austin. USASOC presented a briefing to the association regarding USASOC’s special operations training exercise Jade Helm that will take place from July 15- September 15. The briefing was detailed and provided significant context as to the scope and intent of the training exercise, which is to train U.S. Army Special Operations Forces for future possible missions overseas to protect our nation’s interests.

Smith, Grady relay teams bring home medals from state track, field meet

Track season across the state came to an abrupt halt with the last race of the state track and field meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin May 14-16. Martin County was well represented again, with both Stanton and Grady sending athletes to the track and field grand finale.
