Girl Scouts honor Stanton Woman

MIDLAND - A Stanton woman was one of six women recognized as Women of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest at its annual luncheon March 31 at Green Tree Country Club. Honorees are considered role models for girls who will become the leaders of tomorrow and are selected based on their leadership and contributions to their Permian Basin communities.

STANTON – After three decades of planning and fund raising, the Martin County Convent could get a huge boost with all of its adobe and porch repairs finished in just 12 weeks. The Martin County Convent board met Tuesday to discuss bids received for the restoration project.

Grant to fund underground water’s future

LUBBOCK and WEST TEXAS - It’s the life blood of this part of Texas - and thanks to $2.4 million in federal dollars, Texas Tech University and several other schools including West Texas A&M University will be trying to figure out the status of the Ogallala Aquifer and just how long this part of the world can depend on that critical water source. The underground water supply stretches from Martin County and the Permian Basin all the way to South Dakota and beyond.

Robber turns to assault when surprised by woman at Martin County farm

MARTIN COUNTY - Area lawmen are looking for a burglar who turned to assault when he was caught snooping around Martin County farm buildings Tuesday night south of Grady schools. The 30ish-aged, white male had long scruffy brown hair and a beard - and according to the police report, “stunk”.

The award-winning Stanton High School Band under Director Stazie Church received yet another Sweepstakes award, this one March 23. This is the fifth consecutive year the Best Band Herd has earned a sweepstakes - and this year the band earned Division ONE ratings from every single judge.

Worst intersection in town finally getting a facelift

The worst intersection in Martin County for drivers is getting some muchneeded changes. A four-way system of flashing redlights is being installed at the intersection of Hwy. 137 and old Hwy. 20, called Business 20 or Front Street or by some, just a nightmare.

Lawrence responds to grocery store problem

STANTON - Jay Lawrence made no bones about it - his store in Stanton had a problem. And work this past week has begun to solve that problem. Not just in Stanton - but in all 21 of the Lawrence Brothers stores across West Texas and New Mexico. It’s a problem that many businesses face on a regular basis and particularly this year.
