CRP enrollment runs through end of February

MARTIN COUNTY - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack reminded farmers and ranchers that the next general enrollment period for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) began Dec. 1 and continues through Feb. 26, 2016.

Candidate announces for constable position

MARTIN COUNTY - One more person filed this week just before the deadline to get on the ballots of the Republican and Democratic primaries next March. Franklin Lovelle Floyd filed for constable of Precincts 2 and 4 in Martin County, a position that has been vacant for many years. Floyd runs unopposed, having filed in the Republican Primary.

Cotton continuing to come to area gins

MARTIN COUNTY and WEST TEXAS - There’s still cotton in a number of fields in Martin County and the surrounding area, but overall the great bulk of this year’s crop has been stripped. Gins remain busy with much of that which has already been hauled out of fields and the continued good weather means work goes on without much interruption.

Standoff becomes Stanton spectator sport

STANTON - For over three hours last Thursday, downtown Stanton was a fortress, with streets closed off and lawmen in full gear with assault rifles drawn. Rolling into town were SWAT members and the big vehicle Midland County uses in standoff and hostage situations. At the center of all the attention was Curtis Becker, the same former local and state law-Commisman who was involved in a standoff earlier this year.

Martin County at its finest

GLASSCOCK COUNTY - They came down Hwy. 137 from Tarzan, Stanton and Lenorah. Boll buggies, strippers and module builders crossed the county line into Midland and then Glasscock County, led by the former ag students of their teacher, Gary Earhart, who was in critical condition in the hospital in Midland. Earhart, who taught for many years in Grady as the FFA teacher before he became the Martin County agent, had been airlifted just hours before to Midland.

Grand opening of new firehall noon to 2, Dec. 6

STANTON - Volunteer firefighters invite everyone in Martin County to the Grand Opening of the new firehall in Stanton. From noon to 2 pm, Dec. 6 firemen will serve hamburgers and hotdogs plus all the trimmings to all in the community in celebration of the grand opening of the long-awaited addition to Stanton’s and Martin County’s infrastructure.

Football, ginning seasons continue into December

MARTIN COUNTY and WEST TEXAS - Football is not the only exciting season this December as farmers and seasonal workers are enjoying good cotton yields so far this ginning season. Some wet weather combined with the Thanksgiving holiday might have slowed the winter harvest slightly but area gins continue to report increasing numbers.
