Weird week of crime keeps Martin County lawmen busy

MARTIN COUNTY - It could have been the moon - or blame it on whatever strikes your fancy. But for whatever reason, this was a weird week for Martin County lawmen. There were plenty of wrecks to keep law enforcement busy - fortunately no serious injuries or fatalities - and of course the weekly oilfield thefts, this time at locations east of Stanton.

Drastic drought conditions lead to drastic measures

STANTON - Area residents are grateful for the moisture received over Howard and Martin counties in the recent months. However at the end of March, the Palmer Drought Severity Index showed Martin and Howard counties in severe drought. The Permian Basin Underground Water Conservation District would like to remind you of the continuing need to conserve water.

Dead man found in county believed killed in Andrews

MARTIN COUNTY - The body of a 21-year-old man was found this week in Martin County - and is believed to be an Andews man reportedly kidnapped and murdered. Andrews Police are investigating the kidnapping and murder of a 21-year-old man, Andrews Police Chief Bud Jones said on June 17 a report was filed with police in reference to the possible kidnapping of a man who lived in the northwest part of the city.

New study estimates $20 billion, 30,000 jobs from Cline

SAN ANTONIO and MARTIN COUNTY - An updated study that includes Martin County estimates the oil and gas industry in the Cline Shale of West Texas could have a $20 billion economic impact and support more than 30,000 jobs by 2022. The Permian Basin in West Texas has a multitude of overlapping oil fields, but the emerging Cline Shale on the northeastern edge has created a stir.

VA at Big Spring facing second round of study

BIG SPRING - The VA medical center at Big Spring had remained under the radar until this week when the public learned the center has the longest wait times in the state for established patients seeking specialty care. That prompted U..S. Rep. Mike Conaway Monday to call evidence of cooked books and lengthy wait times at Veterans Affairs facilities “unacceptable.”

MARTIN COUNTY - If there’s any doubt prayer works - well, you should have been in Martin County on Wednesday. A driving thunderstorm slammed into Martin County and surrounding counties with significant rainfall, hail and flash flooding Wednesday night as a series of storms roared in from New Mexico and across the Caprock.

Question: how much cotton lost and is there still time to plant again?

WEST TEXAS - Strong storms have brought beneficial rainfall but also damage to some young cotton plants just doing their best to get established. In places, large hail and extremely high winds – in some locales exceeding 90 miles per hour – overturned pivots and flattened fields in several portions of the South Plains and West Texas. Parmer County reportedly will lose about 30 percent of the crop to hail, and significant damage also has been reported in several other counties.

A pair of tractor trailers came together Tuesday east of Stanton - shutting down the highway and causing a major vehicle fire - but luckily no deaths or serious injuries.

A nasty accident on the interstate this week

Volunteer firefighters from Stanton helped put out a diesel fire after a nasty accident on the interstate this week. Amazingly, no serious injuries were involved.
