Mini-cheer camp here on Aug. 6

STANTON - Mini cheer camp will be Aug. 6 at Stanton High School. Pre-registration is encouraged but shirts are limited so come early. Cost is $35 with came from 8:45 am to 2:30 pm.

Housing info is topic for meeting in Stanton July 22

STANTON - The USDA Rural Development Fort Stockton Area Office, which provides service to Martin County, will be having a housing information meeting on July 22 at the Martin County Senior Citizen Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to provide information regarding the availability of housing loans and grants to assist residents.

Stanton Superintendent David Carr named region’s administrator of year

The Texas Association of School Boards announced this week that David Carr, superintendent of schools in Stanton has been named the Region 18 Superintendent of the Year. Carr also has been announced as a candidate for Texasw Superintendent of the Year. Sponsored by TASB, the awards program has recognized exemplary superintendents for excellence and achievement in educational leadership since 1984.

Martin County judges choose not to marry couples of any kind

Justices of the peace and the county judge in Martin County have decided, at least for now, they do not intend to perform wedding ceremonies for any couples, same sex or otherwise. Texas law does not require judges to marry anyone, but clerks are required to issue marriage licenses when requested. There were more questions than answers from all over the state about every county’s stand on making marriage licenses available for same sex weddings. The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling last week has sent some Texas legislators into a swoon - the state’s attorney general telling the 254 Texas county clerks they didn’t have to issue same sex marriage if they had religious beliefs in opposition to the 6-3 ruling of the nation’s highest court.

Stanton school changes take shape

The initial phase of renovations and construction at Stanton’s schools is moving ahead quickly all over town. At the elementary school, work on the west side has begun in earnest with the old school  entrance removed to make way for major changes at the middle school and elementary offices on that side of the existing school.
