It’s been a week from that place way down under for law and EMS

It’s been the week from hades for law enforcement officers and volunteer emergency and fire folks in Martin County this week. Starting on Friday, there was a wreck with a fatality on Hwy. 349 near Hwy,. 176 at about 4:30 a Chevrolet driven by 36- year-old Cedric Long of Lubbock ran into an 18-wheeler and was killed at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Crashing with a Pickup

A Greenwood woman and her two small children, who were buckled in, are all lucky to be at the hospital in Midland after a crashing with a pickup on the interstate just inside the Martin County line towards Midland. The car was knocked across the median and westbound lanes of the interstate without being hit again, coming to rest in the barrow ditch on the north side of the interstate.

Kevin Cave is new chairman

After 22 years as a board member and chairman of the board of the Mustang Soil and Water Conservation District, Myrl Mitchell is stepping down. Kevin Cave, Zone 5 from the north end of Martin County near Flower Grove, has accepted the position of chairman.

First National Bank

Stanton is in for yet more demo work as the old First National Bank Building downtown is right on the verge of being the next building to have its walls come tumbling down, much like what has gone on recently at both school campuses.

Stanton officer fired on during domestic disturbance call

MARTIN COUNTY - A 53-year-old Stanton man remains in jail this week under $115,000 in bonds after he allegedly fired at a Stanton Police Department officer early Sunday. Thomas (Tommy) Martinez is in custody in the Martin County Jail charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, a first degree felony.

Stanton soph will continue to pursue FFA goals

STANTON - Rankin Kiker has put himself in line for some hefty scholarship bucks, while a representative of Stanton’s FFA in public speaking and other potential moneymaking opportunities at statewide contests. Kiker represented the Stanton chapter this year in FFA Leadership competitions and Public Speaking events.

Strong thunderstorms continue to plague Martin County

Strong thunderstorms continue to plague Martin County as strong winds and heavy rains destroyed more cotton fields. Lightning streaked across the skies and continued to ignite oil field tank batteries keeping volunteer firefighters too busy.

Cotton-killing storms could not have come at a worse time

MARTIN COUNTY - Powerhouse winds followed by brutal downpours that included enough hail to punish young cotton into twigs and stalks have destroyed far too much cotton in Martin and adjacent counties in recent weeks. Without a county agent right now, Martin County has no current data base to determine just how much has been lost - but the sad irony is that while the weather has beaten many fields into little more than sand piles, cotton prices have suddenly jumped above 70 cents a pound and appear likely to stay up thanks to news out of China.

Stanton, Grady fully loaded for school year

MARTIN COUNTY - Unlike many surrounding communities and many school districts all across Texas, both of Martin County’s school districts have fully loaded their boats and are ready to take on the coming school year. Just five weeks or so from the start of school, Stanton and Grady have filled all staff and faculty positions and are prepared for the 2016-17 school year.
