Cotton farmers learning to co-exist with the oil patch

STANTON - Jeremy Louder said his family has been farming cotton for four generations, but if family had its way he wouldn’t even be in the industry. Louder said his father wanted him to do something, anything,, other than cotton farming. “My dad farms, my granddad farms, and his dad also farmed,” Louder said. “It’s what I’ve always loved. I grew up doing it.”

Interim sheriff could be named here on Tuesday

MARTIN COUNTY - Don’t buy a box of Cracker Jacks with one of those little tin deputy badges in it as the prize. Somebody in Martin County might see you with that badge and start yet another rumor that you are the next sheriff of Martin County. The county’s normal rumor mill has gone crazy the last week or so - ever since two-term Sheriff John Woodward announced his resignation.

MARTIN COUNTY - There’s not much room left under the bus in the strange odyssey of Sheriff John Woodward, who resigned Tuesday evening from the position he’s held for the past six years. Efforts to blame someone - anyone - for the mess that has become the Martin County Sheriff’s Department have focused on any number of Martin County officials and lawmen.

Man wanted for murder busted in Stanton Thursday afternoon

STANTON - A man wanted in Brewster County for murder was busted in Stanton Thursday afternoon. Charles Levi Morrow, 30 and staying at a residence in Stanton, was arrested by Stanton Police Chief Fred Schroyer at about 12:30 Thursday afternoon.

Another bad wreck on Hwy. 349 claims lives of three, injures another

WEST TEXAS - Three were killed and another injured in a two-vehicle crash Monday just north of Martin County on the dreaded and deadly Hwy. 349. Two Lamesa men were killed and a third occupant badly injured in the head-on wreck between Lamesa and Midland. Two of the dead men were prison guards with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at the Preston Smith Unit in Lamesa.

Cotton harvest running hot and heavy

MARTIN COUNTY and WEST TEXAS - Cotton harvest continues to run hot and heavy all across West Texas and Martin County. After some of the driest years on record, cotton farmers in Martin County and West Texas are finally getting a chance to haul some cotton to the gin. Bale count numbers are beginning to be released with Stanton’s gin reporting 7209 bales this week and Tarzan gin at 9009 as of Tuesday this week.
