Cotton-killing storms could not have come at a worse time

MARTIN COUNTY - Powerhouse winds followed by brutal downpours that included enough hail to punish young cotton into twigs and stalks have destroyed far too much cotton in Martin and adjacent counties in recent weeks. Without a county agent right now, Martin County has no current data base to determine just how much has been lost - but the sad irony is that while the weather has beaten many fields into little more than sand piles, cotton prices have suddenly jumped above 70 cents a pound and appear likely to stay up thanks to news out of China.

Ma Nature goes off on cotton farmers

MARTIN COUNTY - It was the most brutal of murders that took place in the central to northern parts of Martin County this past week. After weeks of the standard hot and dry summer weather, Mother Nature got off her meds and unleashed some pent-up wrath on the cotton farmers in central Martin County - who basically had been minding their own business and only occassionally praying for a good shower or two.
