Large turnout of early voters going to polls

STANTON - Almost 75 voters have turned out the first three days of early voting for the hotly-contested Board of Trustees race of the Stanton Independent School District. With six candidates in the race, it was expected that voting might be heavy for what is otherwise a light turnout.

Rains making cotton planting look promising

Cotton planting time is rapidly approaching across the Texas Plains, and recent weather events have boosted optimism for a successful start to the 2015 crop. As of Friday morning, every West Texas Mesonet weather station had recorded at least a bit of rainfall in the previous 96 hours.

Volunteered

Sharyland Utilities volunteered to put up the new scoreboard at the Stanton city park. The new scoreboard came from funds given by the Old Sorehead Trade Days bunch.

Martin County Chamber of Commerce board members Kelley Pickens, Heather Simpson and Justin Burch along with employees and Manager John Guinn cut the ribbon on the new Super 8 Hotel on I-20 which opens this week in Stanton to the public

Grady could be losing both its football and roundball coaches

GRADY - Trustees in Grady could be in the market for both a basketball coach and a football coach next fall. Fresh off another deep run into the state Class A roundball playoffs, Coach Thomas Clay has announced plans to move to a higher classification - possibly heading for Krum, a large, growing Class AAAA school east of the Dallas area. Clay, who’s been with the Wildcats for the past five years, may   ot be the only coach leaving Grady.  Football Coach Chris Kuykendall is considering a move to Oakwood, another Class A school, this one in deep East Texas. Clay will be coaching basketball at Krum, while Kuykendall has expressed interest in going into school administration. At presstime it was not clear whether he would be coaching at Oakwood or working as a school administrator - or both.

Ground has been broken on both the baseball and softball fields as Stanton’s school bond work continues hot and heavy. The site is north and a little west of Buffalo Stadium

Early voting opens here on April 27

STANTON - Dates have been announced for the Stanton Independent School District Board of Trustees election on May 9. Early voting will be from April 27 through May 5, weekdays only from 8 am to 5 pm at the Martin County Elections Office across from the Martin County Courthouse.

The driveway to the new Stanton

Crews were busy busting curbs on Hwy. 137 for the driveway to the new Stanton fire hall being built on the site. The foundation is poured and steel and materials for the building are expected to arrive and start up in coming days

The driver of this rollover

The driver of this rollover on I-20 in Martin County was believed to be from Seminole. He was critical when airlifted to Odessa earlier this week, after flipping his pickup when he rear-ended another truck. None of the four men in the other truck was hurt
