Standoff becomes Stanton spectator sport

STANTON - For over three hours last Thursday, downtown Stanton was a fortress, with streets closed off and lawmen in full gear with assault rifles drawn. Rolling into town were SWAT members and the big vehicle Midland County uses in standoff and hostage situations. At the center of all the attention was Curtis Becker, the same former local and state law-Commisman who was involved in a standoff earlier this year.

Martin County at its finest

GLASSCOCK COUNTY - They came down Hwy. 137 from Tarzan, Stanton and Lenorah. Boll buggies, strippers and module builders crossed the county line into Midland and then Glasscock County, led by the former ag students of their teacher, Gary Earhart, who was in critical condition in the hospital in Midland. Earhart, who taught for many years in Grady as the FFA teacher before he became the Martin County agent, had been airlifted just hours before to Midland.

Grand opening of new firehall noon to 2, Dec. 6

STANTON - Volunteer firefighters invite everyone in Martin County to the Grand Opening of the new firehall in Stanton. From noon to 2 pm, Dec. 6 firemen will serve hamburgers and hotdogs plus all the trimmings to all in the community in celebration of the grand opening of the long-awaited addition to Stanton’s and Martin County’s infrastructure.

Football, ginning seasons continue into December

MARTIN COUNTY and WEST TEXAS - Football is not the only exciting season this December as farmers and seasonal workers are enjoying good cotton yields so far this ginning season. Some wet weather combined with the Thanksgiving holiday might have slowed the winter harvest slightly but area gins continue to report increasing numbers.

Winkler’s hat into the ring means a contested race here

MARTIN COUNTY - Richard L. Winkler of Tarzan made it an interesting electino year this week when he filed for county commissioner in Prec. 3. Up until this week there’s not been much of a rush to file for several county offices that will be on the November, 2016, Martin County ballot.

Grady to drop down; Stanton staying in Class AAA

Grady will move down into the small school division of six man schools, while Stanton appears to be headed back into the same classification as it has been for the last two years. The UIL released last Thursday its cutoff numbers for all of the state’s athletic districts - football and basketball districts will be decided first, with an announcement coming Feb. 1 for all schools in the state.
