Bid process begins to buy new vehicles for sheriff’s office

MARTIN COUNTY - Commissioners started over Tuesday, agreeing that bids will be sought for two new police package SUVs, similar to the two Tahoes that have kept the county court and sheriff’s department in the news in recent weeks. At Tuesday’s meeting of the commissioners court, Sheriff John Woodward described discussions as “much more cordial . . . I really think we are all making an effort to get everything on the table and get along.”

This little guy

This little guy blended into the dirt on a Martin County ranch road earlier this month - mom was hiding in the mesquite bushes. Deer numbers have slowly increased across Martin, Dawson and Glasscock counties despite the tremendous growth of oilfield traffic

Volunteer firefighters from Stanton and Lenorah assisted Andrews firemen in fighting a major oilfield fire this last week in Andrews County. Over $6 million in fracking equipment went up in the explosion and fire.

MARTIN COUNTY - Since relocating to its new facilities just over two years ago, Martin County Hospital has experienced impressive growth in both people treated at the facility and services offered to the community. “From the beginning, the hospital has strived to bring care to the citizens of Martin County,” said Administrator Paul McKinney.

Sheriff, court to meet on vehicles purchase

MARTIN COUNTY - Sheriff John Woodward will meet in a special meeting with the Martin County Commissioners Court Tuesday in an effort, as Woodward said, “for us to all get on the same page about these vehicles.” The sheriff’s department had drawn the ire of some of the commissioners, who have been vocal in opposing the purchase of vehicles for that department without giving local dealers an opportunity to bid on them.

Another wreck, another death in Martin County this week

MARTIN COUNTY - A 25-year-old Midland man was killed early Wednesday after a tire blew on a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban, causing the driver to veer into oncoming traffic. George Mutua, a Nigerian man from Houston who worked for Chevron, was going north on Hwy. 349 at about 5:45 am, Wednesday.

Tarzan Post Office remains open, but hours to be cut

TARZAN - The good news is that the post office in Tarzan will remain open - but like the postal facility at Lenorah, the hours will be reduced, probably around the first of the year. A public hearing this week that was called at the Tarzan facility was attended by a number of area residents. Of 107 surveys mailed to customers, 38 were returned with the overwhelming majority urging the US Postal Service to keep the office open, but realign the hours.
