Zacharias joins city police department as newest officer

STANTON - Angelo State University graduate Gloriana Zacharias is the newest addition to the City of Stanton Police Department, having been sworn in recently by POlice Chief Fred Shroyer.

Zacharias is a native of Carmargo, Mexico, and became a citizen of the US in 2010.

She is a graduate of Denver City High School and received her associates degree in paralegal studies from Midland College before going on toe ASU where she double majored in psychology and criminal justice.

San Antonio Livestock Show

Stanton’s Maddie Baker had a pretty strong run this spring, showing the Reserve Champion Duroc at the huge San Antonio Livestock Show, pictured above with her parents and breeder Will Winters and family of Idalou. At the right is Baker with her Duroc barrow that won the Austin Star of Texas show at the end of the show season.

Regional UIL academic meet

Five Stanton students head for regionals in academics

STANTON - Five Stanton students have advanced to the Region II Class AAA academic meet in Abilene Apr. 13-14.

Alexis Silva won the district headline writing competition and Sebastian DeLeon was third, both qualifying for Abilene.

Greenwood volunteer likes fires a little too much - busted for a string of area arsons

GREENWOOD - A Greenwood volunteer firefighter was being held Wednesday and faces felony charges related to arson.

Alan Alton Self, 24, admitted to starting multiple fires, according to a press release from the Midland County Sheriff’s Office. Bond has not been set.

Water conservation district changes rules for wells deeper than 500 feet

STANTON - In response to changes in the types of wells and their depths being drilled in the area, the Permian Basin Underground Water Conservation District has adopted a policy requiring a Cementing Completion Report on every water well drilled deeper than 500 feet in order to protect the health and welfare of the citizens of the district and protect the aquifers.

The policy, which was adopted at a board meeting Feb. 8, states “As Dockum Group (Santa Rosa) wells become more common in the PBUWCD the district must carefully protect the water quality and quantity of each aquifer penetrated.

Stanton native is the opening act for yet another big name star

MIDLAND - Rory Payne, a 2000 graduate of Stanton High School, will be the opening act for Texas music legend Robert Earl Keen on Mar. 23 at the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center.

Keen has become a legend of Texas in the outlaw country style with ties that go deep in the state: He was born in Houston, educated in College Station, is now based in the Hill Country, and has traveled to every corner of Texas and the world in his 30- year career.

More wrecks, including a fatality keep law, EMS busy all weekend long

MARTIN COUNTY - The wrecks keep piling up all over Martin County - four on Saturday including one that killed a Midland woman and several more this week, two more Thursday.

Most all the wrecks are scattered all over the county, but primarily on roads like Hwy. 349 and Hwy. 176.

The death Saturday involved the Mustang to the right that was totally destroyed when 29-year-old Jesse Whitlow drove into an oncoming tractor trailer and was dead at the scene.
