Bond issue up for vote in May; trustees not sure which plan

GRADY - Next Monday’s regular school board meeting could be the one - but even if trustees don’t finalize their plans for renovating current school facilities or building a new school, it’s clear there will be a bond issue in May. Just what will be on that bond is what’s still up in the air. School trustees came closer this week to finalizing construction plans. The meeting last Thursday was the latest in a series of special meetings, many that include discussions with architects from Parkhill Smith and Cooper.

Techs largest gift ever should benefit all of West Texas

LUBBOCK - Call it seed money. Texas Tech announced a $19.3 million research contribution from Bayer CropSciences at a news conference this week - dollars that will be used all over the South Plains and West Texas. The contribution, combined with matching funds from the Texas Research Incentive Program, totals $38.6 million - the largest of its kind in the school’s history.

Grady trustees seek consensus on construction

GRADY - The proposed Monday meeting of Grady school trustees was moved to thursday due to conflicts for some trustees - but the target date of Feb. 28 remains at the center of the board’s plans. School trustees were expected to come closer this week to finalizing construction plans. The meeting is the latest in a series of special meetings, many that include discussions with architects from Parkhill Smith and Cooper.

Wrecks claim lives of two area men

MARTIN COUNTY - Two area men were killed in separate accidents this week as the focus of the high number of crashes in this part of Texas fell squarely on Martin County. The first wreck was a bad one Monday involving multiple vehicles, with 11 persons going to hospitals and one man declared dead at the scene. That man was identified as Gilberto Ruiz-Flores, 43 of Big Spring. And early Thursday morning a 22-year-old Lenorah man died in a wreck on Hwy. 176 when the vehicle he was driving swerved into ongoing traffic.

Grady gets close to final decision on school options

GRADY - Monday’s Grady school board meeting moved plans a little closer to a final proposal, which could be on the table within the next two weeks - certainly before the Feb. 28 date that’s the last chance to call a bond issue for the May election. School trustees came closer this Monday - the latest in a series of special meetings - after visiting with architects from Parkhill Smith and Cooper.

Stanton trustees hope to finalize school facilities

STANTON - Another meeting this coming Monday could be pivotal in the Stanton school board’s decision-making processes for building new school facilities here. The special meeting follows a string of special and regular meetings trustees have been involved in over recent weeks - all with the goal of renovating or building school facilities at both the high school and elementary campuses.

Martin County Livestock Show starts today

MARTIN COUNTY - FFA and 4-H students from Stanton and Grady will be in Stanton next week for the annual Martin County Junior Livestock Show, which begins today with the weigh-in of lambs, goats, pigs and steers. Animals begin arriving at 4 p.m., today at the Martin County Show Barn west of the Martin County Community Center. On Friday the goat show begins at 9 a.m. with the sheep show to follow.
