Dynamic duo of storms collides to wreak havoc on West Texas

MARTIN COUNTY - Winter storms from both the north and the west - one bitter cold and the other sopping wet - converged in West Texas and the Panhandle this past weekend, slamming much of Martin and surrounding counties with power outages, closed roads, churches and schools. The blue norther that came in straight out of the North Pole brought the bitter cold with it and went all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Winter weather knocked out power all across West Texas halting hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil from being produced. Like several residences and businesses in the area, electricity had still not been restored as of Wednesday morning.

No new candidates file to enter race for county offices

MARTIN COUNTY - At presstime Thursday there were no new filings for political office in Martin County. Incumbent Martin County Commissioner Valentino Sotelo was the first candidate to file for the March primaries. Sotelo filed last week in the Democratic Primary, which will be March 4, 2014. He faces a challenger in the commissioners race for Prec. 2.

Serving Stanton, Lenorah, Tarzan and all of Martin County

A Lubbock man was transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Midland Memorial Hospital Tuesday night after a train crashed into his pickup at Highway 137 in Stanton, according to DPS officials. The driver was headed north when his company pickup got caught between the emergency crossing bars as they descended. A westbound train clobbered the pickup at about 5:40 p.m.. Charges are pending against the man, who was treated and released at MMH.

Cemetery association’s annual fund drive beginning this week

MARTIN COUNTY - Volunteers for Evergreen Cemetery have been busy the past few weeks preparing notices to members announcing the annual dues are forthcoming. Over 500 cards are scheduled to be mailed to members within the next couple of weeks, according to Danny Fryar, president of the Evergreen Cemetery Association

Students from the Stanton FFA, Grady FFA and Martin County 4- H gathered at the county livestock barn Saturday to give the whole area a good cleaning. Both ag teachers, the county agent and a bunch of parents helped out, getting the barn ready for the county show in January.

MARTIN COUNTY - Flush - that’s what Martin County is right now - in tall cotton, cuttin’ a fat hog, hitting the jackpot, on a roll . . . Pick whatever cliche fits, but the bottom line, so to speak, is taxing entities in Martin County never had it so good. And while the energy dollars are flowing, many in the community are urging their elected officials to take advantage of those big bucks now while they are available

Good news for Martin County: I-20 to open early

MARTIN/HOWARD COUNTIES - Good news came early Thursday when the Texas Department of Transportation announced eastbound lanes were open on the interstate around noon and westbound lanes could be open as early as Thursday evening. Traffic from the interstate has glutted many roads in Martin County, with all of the trucks, buses and cars detoured off the major artery and right through Martin County.
