Lucia Pickett

DENTON - Lucia Pickett, 94 of Denton, formerly of Stanton, died Dec. 9, 2014, in a Denton hospital. Funeral services will be 2 pm, Dec. 13 at the First United Methodist Church in Stanton. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 pm to 7 pm, Dec. 12 at Gilbreath Funeral Home. She was born Sep. 23, 1920, in Reagan, and married Roy Pickett Nov. 15, 1942, in El Paso. He preceded her in death Sep. 8, 1991. She graduated from Texas State Women’s University, now TWU, in 1941 and moved to Stanton in 1952. She worked as a legal secretary for her husband and also for West Texas Abstract until she was 87 years old. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of First United Methodist Church of Stanton and was the church pianist and organist for 50 years. She was an avid Texas A & M fan.

Ethel Mae Barber

STANTON - Ethel Mae Barber Daugherty died Dec. 4, 2014, in Fort Worth. She was born to Earnest and Lucy Garrett Barber Sep. 2, 1925, in DeKalb. The family moved to Stanton in 1930, where they lived on St. Francis Strett with eight brothers and shree sisters. She was among the first black students to attend Stanton schools for black students in 1936-1937. Survivors include a sister, Hazel Barber Hillard of Hobbs, NM; a daughter, Ernestine Daughtery Smith of Midland; grandchildren Paula Daugherty Johnson (James) of Fort Worth, Boris Smith of Hobbs, NM , Melody Smith Brooks (Edward) of Hobbs NM and Alvin Ray Smith (Kesha) of Midland; 17 great grandchildren and 25 great, great grandchildren ; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers and two sisters and her grandfather Eugene Daugherty. Services were at Stanton Memorial Funeral Home Dec. 6.

Mary Helen Olivas

STANTON - Funeral services for Mary Helen Olivas of Stanton were at the Stanton Memorial Funeral Home and Chapel Dec. 10, with Deacon Clemente Villa officiating. Interment followed at St Joseph’s  atholic Cemetery. Rosary Vigil was Dec. 9 at Stanton Memorial Funeral Home. She was born Oct. 21, 1971, in Stanton and died Dec. 4, 2014. She was a lifelong resident of Stanton. She had twodogs who she loved like children - “Pocket” and “Chiquita”. She is preceded in death by her father Albert Olivas Sr. and sister Lorena Olivas. She is survived by her mother Antonia Olivas of Stanton; brothers Albert Olivas, Joe Olivas and Donald Olivas, all of Stanton; and sister Gloria Olivas of Stanton.

Jessie R. Simons

STANTON - Jessie R. Simons, 74, died Nov. 24, 2014, after fighting his battle with cancer. He was a wonderful husband, step-father and step grandfather who enjoyed making people laugh and was surrounded by his family, in his home, when he departed. He was a part of the Lancaster ISD custodial crew for many years where he was a frequent smiling face, always offering a helping hand and even the kind gestuer of sharing his meal with a student who needed it. He was born in Dallas on Nov. 19. He is survived by his wife, Lois Simons of Stanton; brothers Homer Simons of Lancaster and Eugene Simons of Lancaster; sister Betty Akins of Cross Plains; step family Karen and Tamara Nix of Stanton; Freddie, Heather, Nathan and Jordilee Nix of Stanton; and Linn Nix of Big Spring; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father William Simons, mother Zeda Cobb, sister Jenny Simons and brother Henry Simons. Arrangements were under Stanton Memorial Funeral Home.

Patricia Maxine Hanson

BOWIE - Patricia Maxine (Smith) Hanson,81, known as Maxine to those who knew her well, Mac to those who loved her, Mother and Grandma to those she loved most, died Nov. 26, 2014 in Bowie. Funeral services were Nov. 29 at Bellevue Church of Christ. Burial followed at Oakhill Cemetery in Stoneburg. Arrangements were entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home of Bowie. In lieu of flowers the family requests you make a donation to your favorite charity. She was born May 25, 1933, to Tom and Irene (Yarbrough) Smith south of Loraine in Mitchell County. She married Posey Joe Hanson Nov. 16, 1950, leaving her family and everything she knew, to move to Bowie. She spent the remainder of her years in the Bellevue and Bowie area making friends, a family and a life. If a kid or grandkid was involved she was too. She, along with Posey Joe, were founding members of the Jim Bowie Riding Club. She, Posey Joe, and the kids rode in many grand entries and parades.

ODESSA Jimmie Sue Lane, 88 of Monahans/Odessa, died Nov. 5, 2014, in Odessa.Funeral Services were Nov. 10 at Sunset Memorial with Bill Billett, Chaplain of Manor Park, Inc., officiating. Burial and arrangements are by Sunset Memorial. She was born in Stanton to Jim and Anna Snider on Jan. 12, 1926. She was one of nine children. She was a homemaker and seamstress. She married Jimmy R. Lane in 1971 in Monahans. Her deepest love was for her children and family. She was preceded in death by her husband and daughter Sherrie Wilson, grandson Randolf Barnes and many brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son Randall and Wanda Barnes, son Jeffrey Barnes, son Steven and Christi Barnes, sister Mary Foster, brother Alfred (Bo) Snider, Grandchildren Travers Slattery, Deseree Scott, Jamie Williams, Jaclyn Wallace, Brandi McReynolds, Greatgrandchildren Kari Beamon, Arianna Robinson and Ava McReynolds. Great-Great-grandchildren Kaidence and Zion Beamon.

Belva Jean “B” Henderson

EASTLAND-Belva Jean B Henderson, 84, died Nov. 13, 2014, in Eastland. Services were Nov. 15 in Alameda Cemetery with grandsons-in-law officiating, directed by Edwards Funeral Home of Eastland. Mrs. Henderson was born on Dec. 18, 1929, to John Amos and Ola Mae (Duncan) Blackwell in Gorman. She attended Tarleton State College, was a member of the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock, and she enjoyed arts and crafts. She was preceded in death by a son, Ricky James Henderson, and both parents. Survivors include a son, Jim and wife, Angie Henderson of Eastland; granddaughters, Jenny Sims and husband, Jason of Stanton, Linsey Shields and husband, Rob of Flower Mound; great-grandchildren, Cooper and Chapman Sims of Stanton, Harleigh and Sterling Shields of Flower Mound; as well as numerous cousins. She is also survived by her companion, Buell Wynn of Shallowater.
