Buffs stampede Cowboys; open season with Owls

PLAINS – The Stanton Buffaloes dominated the Plains Cowboys on both sides of the ball in the second scrimmage of the 2018-2019 football season.

Last Friday, Stanton hit the road again and traveled north to battle Plains. The Buff’s offense found the end zone 15 times during the span of scheduled plays and live quarters while the Stanton defense was too tough and did not allow the Cowboys any points.

Stanton’s offensive improvement was very encouraging to the coaching staff.

MIDLAND - The high school cross country season kicked off Saturday, as the Buffaloes and Lady Buffs competed at the Tall City XC Invite.

Stanton was well represented at the meet, which was held at Rock the Desert, with

a Top 20 finish on the boys’ side, and Top 25 for the girls.

Josh Hensley paced the Buffaloes, finishing 18th overall in the crowded field, with a time of 20 minutes, 28 seconds on the three-mile course.

“Josh’s Top 20 finish was expected, and he will continue to go up,” Coach Morgan Ashmore said. “His time will only continue to improve, so this was a good start for him.”

Over 60 report for Stanton two-a-days

STANTON – Though the numbers are slightly lower than expected, Buffalo Stadium welcomed 65 football players to the field for the first week of two-a-day workouts. That number could climb with a second week of workouts and the start of school on Aug. 14.

The first week of two-adays have not been easy as the practices run from 4 p.m. through 7 p.m., the hottest part of the day.

But through the blood, sweat and tears, Stanton head coach Cody Hogan was pleased to see his players in better shape than they were last season.

Grady’s road to the playoffs start with two-a-days

GRADY – The Grady Wildcats had a small taste of district and playoff success that season that will surly help motivate the nearly two dozen teenagers that reported for two-a-day practices on Monday.

The annoying alarm clock buzzer marked the start of the 2019 football season for 20 Grady Wildcat players as they crawled out of bed bright and early Monday morning.

Grady Coach Brent Lucas was already on the practice field when the sun came up to welcome his team to another long and prosperous season.

Like last season, Lucas hopes to bring back that tough mentality and pound the ground with a fierce running attack that hopefully translates into ball possession and clock control.
