Linksters third at Big Lake meet

BIG LAKE - Stanton’s golf teams went south Monday to compete in the Reagan County Golf Meet.

The varsity boys finished third in the team standings.

Peyton Barnhill - 99; Cody Beasley - 110; Braden Waggoner - 106; David Hunt - 125; Nicholas Aguirre - 110.

Buffs split four at tourney, crush Jackets

Stanton’s softball team competed in the Crossroads Tournament in Big Spring last weekend and finished with two wins and two losses before returning home to crush Kermit on Tuesday.

The first win was a 7-4 performance over Ralls. Stanton took and early 7-0 lead after two innings and held off a late charge by Ralls for the victory.

Victoria Carby had two doubles and Mari Lozano had a double while Jasymne Chapa, Carby, Alyssa McCalister and Trinity Johnson accounted for the seven runs batted in.

Johnson earned the win pitching four inning and giving up four runs on 11 hits. Carby closed out the game by striking out all three batters in the fifth inning.

The Laby Buffs second win was a 10-8 showing over Dalhart, which jumped on top early with five runs in the first inning. Stanton was slow a steady scoring at least one run in four of the first five innings for an 8-5 lead.

Wildcats, Coyotes, Bearkats all still playing

WEST TEXAS – All three teams from District 8A are still alive in the Class A boys state playoffs while none remain in the girls bracket.

On the boy’s side, Grady and Garden City won their bidistrict games in Andrews on Monday night while Borden County had a first round bye for being district champions.

Grady beat Wellman-Union 50-38 and Garden City held on to beat O’Donnell 44-41.

The area round of action pits Borden County against the Whitharral Panthers while Garden City will play the District 6 champion New Home Leopards.

Grady will face off with District 5 champions Springlake-Earth Wolverines on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Frenship High School.

Stanton girls off to a strong start

MONAHANS - The Stanton varsity softball team put together an impressive opening tournament, competing in the I-20 Leadoff Classic in Monahans last weekend.

The Buffs went 4-1 in the tourney, winning the first four games before losing to host Monahans.

Stanton opened the weekend with a 6-1 win over Grape Creek.

The Buffs racked up a total of 14 with Trinity Johnson leading the way with three.

Victoria Carby, Alyssa McCalister and Chela Escamilla finished with two hits each and Jessica Holguin, Jasmyne Chapa, Kaitlynn Albert and Kenzi Spinks added one hit each.

Extra base hits went to Carby with two doubles, McCalister had a double and Chapa knocked a triple.

Carby earned the complete game win with six innings pitched giving up five hits and one run while striking out 14.

The Lady Buffs would then destroy Van Horn 16-1.

Cisco clobbers Buffs in first round loss

MERKEL – District champions are hard to beat in the playoffs and Stanton had to battle a top notch team in the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs.

Stanton loses to Bulldogs, Indians in district action

STANTON – The Stanton Buffaloes district basketball season continued last week with games against Coahoma and Jim Ned.

The Bulldogs put together a perfect game plan to beat the Buffs 50-33.

Sebastian Escamilla led Stanton with 13 points and Reagan Nichols and Cody Beasley added five points each.

Wildcats wrap up season with wire-to-wire victory

GRADY – The Grady Wildcat’s junior high B team wrapped up their season with a 23-20 victory over Sterling City on Monday.

The Wildcats started out with a 6-0 run in the first quarter and took a 10-7 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Grady increased its lead to 20-11 after the third stanza and held on the final few minutes for the one possession victory.

Wildcats now 13-1 after winning tourney

GRADY - The Grady junior high boys basketball team competed in the Grady Junior High Tournament this past weekend. The Grady boys earned three victories and walked away with the tournament championship.

In the first game Grady defeated Water Valley 36-6. Grady used a strong second quarter pull away from Water Valley.

Leading scorers for Grady were Logan Aaron with eight points and Aaron Rodgers and Kody Cates with seven points each. Colt Carson finished with six points while Blaise Warren chipped in with four and Austin Aaron and Quint Harrell tossed in two points apiece.
