Wildcats take crown in Grady Tournament

GRADY - The Grady Junior High basketball tournament was played Jan. 21 at the Grady High School Gymnasium. Grady’s junior high boys opened the tournament against a tough Highland team. The Hornets would keep the game interesting until the final buzzer but Grady took the first round 36-29 and advanced to the championship game.

Grady boys and girls capture touney crowns in Garden City; at home next

GRADY - The Grady Junior High Wildcats reigned supreme with both girls and boys teams winning Garden City JH Basketball Tournament champions.

The boys junior high team started out playing against their tournament hosts, winning 31-14 against Garden City BearKats.

Gunnar Rivas led his team putting 17 on the boards for the Wildcats. Cooper Sims and Garret Talbott would add four each while Brendan Pelletier and Nathan Cassell put up three.

Midland Classical was the next to fall to the Wildcats to clench the championship win 43-27.

“I was very proud of this young group for winning the Garden City JH Basketball Tournament this past Saturday. This group of young players have improved all year.” commented Coach Chris Short of their win.

Rivas dominated the court, netting 24 points for the Grady Wildcats. Sims scored eight. Talbott and Pelletier both contributed with four each. Braden Welch added two and Jacob Roders one.

Stanton girls crush competition for tourney title

COLORADO CITY 

Stanton’s seventh grade girls traveled to Colorado City for the Wolves Tournament this past weekend and returned home as tournament champions.

Stanton trampled Forsan in its opening game winning 31-1 and advancing to the championship game.

High scorer for Stanton was Mariah Brooks with 10 points followed by Analiese Gonzales with seven points and Emma Dunn with six. Hailee Veracruz added four and Natalie Taylor and Hazel Martin finished with two points each.

Buffaloes finish third in Mary Tatum Classic

REAGAN COUNTY - The Stanton Lady Buffs claimed third place in the 86th annual Mary Tatum Classic tournament held over the Christmas holidays in Big Lake.

On the first day of pool play, the Lady Buffs had victories over Ozona 45-29, and Sonora 78-27.

Against Ozona, Alyssa Peterson led the way with 17 points, followed by Payge Grable with 10.

Grady to start district season at Loop, O’Donnell

GRADY - The Grady Wildcats final tune-ups before the start of the district season were against Garden City on Dec. 30.

The varsity boys beat the Bearkats 45-42 to improve to 9-4.

Jordan Rodriguez had a game high 21 points followed by Jaylen Short with 10, Luke Slover nine and Devynn Smith five.

The varsity girls lost 39-29.

Barnhill set to play for Hill College

HILLSBORO - San Angelo Central High School senior Bailey Barnhill has signed a letter of intent to compete collegiately in volleyball at Hill College in Hillsboro next fall.

Barnhill is the daughter of Greg and Daina Barnhyill of San Angelo and the granddaughter of Jimmy and Mary Barnhill of Stanton.

She’s the niece of Chris and Shawna Barnhill, also of Stanton.

The 5’5” Barnhill has been playing volleyball since 2006 and has won numerous awards, including being named to the first team all district this year in addition to winning Libero of the Year honors in the district.

Buffaloes continue to struggle, fall to Golden Cranes 64-43

CRANE - The Stanton Buffaloes varsity boys basketball season has turned into a derailed train as the losing streak has hit four straight games with the 64- 43 loss to Crane on Friday.

Austin Fryar led the Buffs in scoring with 14 points followed by Blake Snellgrove with nine, Austin Luna added nine, Colby Gordon chipped in with seven and Wes Ulmer helped the team with four points.

The Buffaloes will be out of action until after Christmas when they travel south to compete in Reagan County Tournament on Dec. 29 and 30.

Pool play action has the Buffs playing Sonora at 10:30 a.m. and Fort Stockton at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 and Grape Creek at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 30.

Grady tackles tough competition at Andrews tourney

ANDREWS - The Grady varsity boys basketball team traveled to Andrews last weekend to test its talents against some stiff West Texas competition.

Grady won its opener with a 37-30 showing over Snyder.

Game two was a high scoring affair but the Wildcats fell 78-61 to El Paso Riverside.

After charting a loss in its previous game, the Wildcats wanted to get back to their winning ways but a tough Shallowater team handed Grady a 58-38 loss.
