Grady to start district season at Loop, O’Donnell

GRADY - The Grady Wildcats final tune-ups before the start of the district season were against Garden City on Dec. 30.

The varsity boys beat the Bearkats 45-42 to improve to 9-4.

Jordan Rodriguez had a game high 21 points followed by Jaylen Short with 10, Luke Slover nine and Devynn Smith five.

The varsity girls lost 39-29.

Barnhill set to play for Hill College

HILLSBORO - San Angelo Central High School senior Bailey Barnhill has signed a letter of intent to compete collegiately in volleyball at Hill College in Hillsboro next fall.

Barnhill is the daughter of Greg and Daina Barnhyill of San Angelo and the granddaughter of Jimmy and Mary Barnhill of Stanton.

She’s the niece of Chris and Shawna Barnhill, also of Stanton.

The 5’5” Barnhill has been playing volleyball since 2006 and has won numerous awards, including being named to the first team all district this year in addition to winning Libero of the Year honors in the district.

Buffaloes continue to struggle, fall to Golden Cranes 64-43

CRANE - The Stanton Buffaloes varsity boys basketball season has turned into a derailed train as the losing streak has hit four straight games with the 64- 43 loss to Crane on Friday.

Austin Fryar led the Buffs in scoring with 14 points followed by Blake Snellgrove with nine, Austin Luna added nine, Colby Gordon chipped in with seven and Wes Ulmer helped the team with four points.

The Buffaloes will be out of action until after Christmas when they travel south to compete in Reagan County Tournament on Dec. 29 and 30.

Pool play action has the Buffs playing Sonora at 10:30 a.m. and Fort Stockton at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 and Grape Creek at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 30.

Grady tackles tough competition at Andrews tourney

ANDREWS - The Grady varsity boys basketball team traveled to Andrews last weekend to test its talents against some stiff West Texas competition.

Grady won its opener with a 37-30 showing over Snyder.

Game two was a high scoring affair but the Wildcats fell 78-61 to El Paso Riverside.

After charting a loss in its previous game, the Wildcats wanted to get back to their winning ways but a tough Shallowater team handed Grady a 58-38 loss.

Grady girls split a pair with two

GRADY - Grady Junior High Girls Black team played Sands and couldn’t quite keep up. The Wildcats fell to the Sands Mustangs 37-23. Leading scorer was Raina Short with 10 and Zoey Ruiz with seven. Sydney Gonzales added four to the board and Ashley Hill netted two.

Stanton falls to Cooper in Badger tournament championship

MERKEL – The Stanton varsity boys’ basketball recorded its first loss of the season at the most inopportune time as Buffs were looking to take home the top prize from the Merkel Badger Tournament last weekend.

The Buffs trailed Abilene Cooper JV by eight points headed in the final quarter, and despite outplaying the larger school in the last eight minutes, Stanton could not overcome the eight point hurdle and lost 61-56.

Stanton struggles in tough Denver City Tournament

DENVER CITY - The Varsity Lady Buffs participated in the Denver City Tournament last weekend, playing some pretty tough competition along the way.

They opened the tournament with host Denver City, and lost a tough fought game, 52-46.

Gut check time for Stanton in squeaker over Kermit

STANTON – Stanton had an early season gut check against some stiff competition in Kermit at the Stanton High School gym on Tuesday. The Buffs trailed 49-48 with 33 seconds left in the contest when Stanton’s Blake Snellgrove zipped a perfect pass to a cutting Colby Gordon for an easy layup that would prove to be the game clincher.

The fans in attendance witnessed an exciting game as the two teams were tied at halftime 26-26. Stanton would take a double digit lead early in the second half only to have the Yellow Jackets come buzzing back to take a one point lead in the final second of the game.

Stanton senior guard Tristan Graves posted a game high 21 points for Stanton in the win, while post Sebastian Escamilla scored 10.

Lady Buffs continue to rack up lopsided wins

STANTON - Stanton varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams continue to destroy all opponents on their schedules.

The varsity lady Buffs went to 5-0 on season with lopsided victories over Kermit 70-25, and Snyder 61-41.

In the Kermit game, Payge Grable scored 16 points and dished out seven assists. Alyssa Peterson had 14 points to go with seven steals.

Kirsten Church scored 10 and had six rebounds. Rounding out the scoring were Katie Harris with nine, Ashlyn Mauldin with six, Kali Spinks with five, Keslee Jenkins with five, Maggie Allred with three, and Skylee Kargl and Sarah Hopkins each scored a free throw.

Season of pee wee football

Another season of pee wee football has come and gone with the final games played last Tuesday night at Buffalo Stadium at Stanton High School.
