Stanton struggles in tough Denver City Tournament

DENVER CITY - The Varsity Lady Buffs participated in the Denver City Tournament last weekend, playing some pretty tough competition along the way.

They opened the tournament with host Denver City, and lost a tough fought game, 52-46.

Gut check time for Stanton in squeaker over Kermit

STANTON – Stanton had an early season gut check against some stiff competition in Kermit at the Stanton High School gym on Tuesday. The Buffs trailed 49-48 with 33 seconds left in the contest when Stanton’s Blake Snellgrove zipped a perfect pass to a cutting Colby Gordon for an easy layup that would prove to be the game clincher.

The fans in attendance witnessed an exciting game as the two teams were tied at halftime 26-26. Stanton would take a double digit lead early in the second half only to have the Yellow Jackets come buzzing back to take a one point lead in the final second of the game.

Stanton senior guard Tristan Graves posted a game high 21 points for Stanton in the win, while post Sebastian Escamilla scored 10.

Lady Buffs continue to rack up lopsided wins

STANTON - Stanton varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams continue to destroy all opponents on their schedules.

The varsity lady Buffs went to 5-0 on season with lopsided victories over Kermit 70-25, and Snyder 61-41.

In the Kermit game, Payge Grable scored 16 points and dished out seven assists. Alyssa Peterson had 14 points to go with seven steals.

Kirsten Church scored 10 and had six rebounds. Rounding out the scoring were Katie Harris with nine, Ashlyn Mauldin with six, Kali Spinks with five, Keslee Jenkins with five, Maggie Allred with three, and Skylee Kargl and Sarah Hopkins each scored a free throw.

Season of pee wee football

Another season of pee wee football has come and gone with the final games played last Tuesday night at Buffalo Stadium at Stanton High School.

Idalou dominates 2016 all-district lists

STANTON - With all four football teams from District 3AAA Division II booted from the state playoffs, the district’s coaches have released the names of the athletes chosen for the All- District Lists. Superlative honors went to junior Mark Caballero from Idalou, senior Tommy James from Colorado City and senior Eden Cervantez of Idalou.

Early season dominance continues for Buffaloes

STANTON - The Stanton Lady Buffs are off to a 3-0 start with victories over Big Spring and Sweetwater last week. On Tuesday, the girls traveled to Big Spring and came away with a big victory 72-49. Alyssa Peterson led all scorers with 26 points. She also added eight blocks and 10 steals. Payge Grable tallied 18 points, seven assists, and four steals.

Kinnear reaches 400th win on Nov. 12

STANTON – Stanton High School girls basketball Coach Jim Kinnear has reached yet another personal and professional milestone, his 400th career victory on the hardwood. The 400th win came on Nov. 12 in Stanton when the Buffs hosted Crane Golden Cranes. The victory was never in doubt as Stanton blasted the Crane 68-15.

Wildcats in ninth as team; Perez again leads the team

ROUND ROCK – The Grady Wildcats qualified the Class A State Cross Country meet for the third straight season. Grady would finish ninth in the team standings with Elijah Perez leading the team in 29th with his time of 18:26.40. Carlos Flores finished 39th with a time of 18:55.84 followed by Alijah Ontiveros in 43rd running a 19:02.27, Cristian Jimenez was 60th ending the race in 19:29.02 and Justin DeLucas was 62nd crossing the finish line in 19:32.21.

Elijah Perez will lead the Grady Wildcats

Grady freshman Elijah Perez will lead the Grady Wildcats at the state cross country meet this week in Round Rock. He was the top Grady finisher at regionals, finishing seventh overall.
