Gibson strikes gold in Amarillo, eyes state crown

AMARILLO - Big money, big towns, and players from big high schools tend to reign supreme over the sport of junior tennis in Texas. But on a warm and clear Panhandle weekend, Dominic Gibson, representing Martin County and the Grady community found a way to break into the ranks of the state’s junior tennis royalty. Gibson’s 6-1, 6-3 victory over Asher Melton of Amarillo in the finals of the USTA Championship Major Zone completed a string of 5 consecutive wins over top players from across Texas.

Stanton’s LaNique Smith finished a close second in the 100 hurdles at the Class AAA Region II meet this last week at Abilene and and will advance to the state track meet on Friday, May 13 at 6:45 pm in Austin.

Gibson cruises through regionals with perfect performance

SAN ANGELO - Grady High School tennis coach Chris Short was busy last week at the Region II Class A Tennis Tournament in San Angelo at Bentwood Country Club with competitors in all four divisions. The star of the week was Boys Singles champion Dominic Gibson with a perfect performance winning 48 straight games to be crowned region champion.

Six Buffs headed to regional meet

After strong performances at the district meet, Stanton’s best athletes headed to Jim Ned to compete in the Area track meet looking to finish in the top four spots and earn a trip to Regional next week in Abilene. LaNique Smith had a strong day earning gold in the 100m hurdles and silver in the 300m hurdles.

District track victories send big crowd of Buffs to area track and field meet

Stanton’s four high school track teams made their way to Sonora to compete in the district track meet. All four teams competed well with the junior varsity boys winning the team title and the varsity boys team and junior varsity girls team each finishing second in their respective divisions.

Ramos claims 800th career win

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The Midland College softball team swept Luna Community College in a Western Junior College Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday to give head coach Tommy Ramos a milestone win. The Lady Chaparrals run-ruled Luna 13-1 in five innings in the first game, and then run-ruled Luna 16-5 in six innings in the second game to give the 18thyear coach his 800th career win.

Richard, Garza named to class A all-state team

AUSTIN - The accolades continued this past week for several area basketball players. The Texas Girls Coaches Association selects All-State teams in all six conferences. Athletes are nominated by member coaches and are selected by the TGCA Basketball All-State Committee during their annual meeting at the UIL girls state basketball tournament.
