AUSTIN – With the conclusion of the 2016 state basketball tournament in San Antonio comes accolades and special recognition for a few special players. Coaches from all across the state submit their vote for who they feel performed the best over the season.

Grady junior high opens season at Klondike

The Grady Junior High track season started last Thursday with teams running at the Cougar Relays in Klondike and then again on Moday at the Mustang Relays as Sands. Klondike Meet Results: 100m 3. Raina Short, 14.18 100m Hurdles 2. Cristian Dyck, 19.14; 3. Sage McAnally, 19.28; 6. Greenley Deatherage, 21.24.

Wildcats maul Jaybirds

A remarkable second half propelled No. 3 Grady to a 75-61 win over No. 9 Jayton in Friday’s Region II-1A semifinal at Abilene Christian University in Abilene. Neither Grady nor Jayton lit up the scoreboard in the first half. The two teams offensive production were mirror images for an identical 26-26 showing.

Grady rallies to beat Menard, win regional crown

A pinch of heart, a dash of grit and a heaping spoon full of determination are the making of a monumental comeback. Grady pulled this winning recipe out of its bag of tricks last Saturday night to beat Menard, 57-55, in the Region II- 1A final at Abilene Christian University’s Moody Coliseum. After trailing by 18 points late in the first half, the Wildcats pieced together one of the greatest comeback performances in Grady High School history.

Graves named top offensive player on all-district lists

STANTON – The Stanton Buffaloes basketball season came to a close last week, but the honors and awards are just starting to roll in. Coaches from around District 5AAA collaborated and chose the district’s best players and put together the All District teams.

Pirates make Wildcats walk plank

ABILENE - The Eula Lady Pirates used a strong second-half finish to beat Grady 39-34 in the Region II-1A girls basketball semifinals on Friday at Abilene Christian’s Moody Coliseum. Grady overwhelmed Eula to start the game with a smothering defense that forced nine turnovers in its first 11 possessions.

Late surge sends Grady to regionals

DENVER CITY – Beating an opponent three times in one season is a tough task for any team to accomplish. That was never more obvious than last Tuesday when state favorite No. 3 Grady needed the full four quarters to knock off district foe Klondike in the Class 1A regional quarterfinal at Dag Azum Gymnasium in Denver City.

Buffs fall to Jim Ned in bi-district game 59-42

SAN ANGELO – Call it nerves, jitters, butterflies or right bad luck, Stanton’s inability to score in the paint cost the Buffaloes their playoff opener as they fell, 59-42 to Tuscola Jim Ned in the Class 3A bi-district game at San Angelo Lake View on Tuesday.

Grady headed to regional tournament

BIG SPRING – Grady coach Jimmy Avery said all the right things during halftime as his No. 24 Grady Wildcats erased an eight-point halftime deficit and held on for 53-49 win against No. 15 Highland in the Class 1A Region II regional-quarterfinal game at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum in Big Spring Tuesday night.

Grady’s Brittany Garza

Grady’s Brittany Garza puts up a runner in the lane against Borden County at the Scurry County Coliseum in Snyder Tuesday night in the bi-district round of the Class A state playoffs. The Wildcats won 70-41 to advance to area Friday in Sterling City.
