Western hognose has an endearing look to some

WEST TEXAS - Just at the mention of the word snake, people tend to respond in a variety of ways ranging from fear and hatred to understanding and fascination. Few other exhibits at the San Angelo Nature Center are commented on quite like the snake exhibits. But there is one species of snake that makes its home here in the Concho Valley that makes the most die-hard “snake-hater” rethink their position due to its endearing face and comical defensive behaviors. That snake is the Western Hognose Snake.

Buffaloes dominate for two wins; drop one to top of Class A

STANTON - The Stanton Buffaloes girl’s basketball team has little trouble dispatching Kermit and Crane, but one of the best teams in Class A, Garden City, took it ont he chin early but rebounded to give the Buffs a close loss.
Against Kermit, the Buffs used a stifling defense to accumulate more than 10 steal to take control of the game early and cruise through the second half.

Stanton gets edged by Seagraves 50-48

STANTON – Stanton recovered from a sparse first quarter to tie the game headed into the final frame, but Seagraves edged the Buffs by two points to win a close non-district game over Stanton on Tuesday. Seagraves jumped out to the early 17-11 lead but Stanton fought back to outscore the Eagles in the seasonce and third  quarter to tie the game at 36-36.

Wildcats turn Whiteface red with 46-42 defensive gem

ROPESVILLE - It took far too long for the comfort of coaches and fans alike, but when the second half rolled around last Friday in Ropesville, the Grady Wildcats had figured out what Whiteface was all about. And the ‘Cats used that new-found knowledge to turn those faces red to the tune of 46- 42, thanks in huge part to a brilliant defensive second half

Grady is back to its winning ways with a 76-51 district victory over Klondike. The Wildcats will face off with Whiteface at Ropes High School Friday at 7:30 for the bi-district championship.

Stanton back in playoffs after win over Reagan County

BIG LAKE — Stanton clinched the final playoff spot out of District 3-AA Division II with its victory over Reagan County on Friday in Big Lake. Stanton came out at the bell swinging and drove the pigskin right down Reagan County’s
throat to the goal line. The Buffs would make a couple mental errors which put them in a fourth and goal situation and the Owls stood tall and kept Stanton off the scoreboard.

Stanton, Grady leave no room for error

MARTIN COUNTY – It’s win or go home for Stanton and Grady this week as both teams will play one final game with the season on the line. Stanton will face-off with Reagan County and Grady will battle Klondike to try and secure the final playoff spot in the respective districts. In District 3AA Division II, Stanton will try to punch its ticket for the fourth and final state playoff slot. To do so they have to knock off Reagan County who has an identical 1-3 district record.

Befuzzled Wildcats can’t figure out Borden County

GRADY - Grady never did find an answer for Borden County’s offense allowing the Coyote’s to run away with the 98-68 district victory and sixth straigh district crown. Grady entered the game a 24 point favorite and was poised to win the district title and after scoring the first touchdown of the game at the 7:51 mark, the win looked eminiate.

Martin County’s pee wee football league honored

Martin County’s pee wee football league honored its most valuable players this week at the end of the super bowl. Receiving the top honors were most valuable players were: Cincinnati’s Nathanel Lopez, Missouri’s Garrett Vanderveen, Nebraska’s Devan Simpson and Kansas’ Luis Aguirre. Vanderveen also received the Player of the Year Award.
