Rainwater harvesting seminar May 30 in Stanton

STANTON - Did you know that in some states it is illegal to harvest rainwater? Luckily, Texas is not one of those states that condones this absurd idea.

Many people say that it doesn’t rain enough in this area to harvest rainwater, but this simply isn’t true. The average annual precipitation in Martin and Howard counties is 19 inches. A 2,000 square foot roof will yield about 1,200 gallons of water during a one inch rainfall event.

Park possibilities get city attention; county a partner?

STANTON - A presentation on public parks Monday at Stanton’s city council meeting was well received - so much so that Mayor Jim Smith went to the Martin County Commissioners Court meeting Tuesday where Brandon Ireton’s proposals for a city/county park were presented again.

Ireton, who has a background in parks and recreation planning, presented a detailed park proposal to both the city council and the commissioners court with the hope that the two might be able to work together to find property for a large park complex and then come up with the funding to make it happen.

“I thought it was an outstanding presentation,” Smith said this week. “It’s something we’ve talked about in the past, but this time maybe we can get something done.”
