West Texas referees on endangered species list

WEST TEXAS - The first high school football practices for the 2017 season are less than a month away while the coaches have finalized their schedules, they may not have enough men in the white and black stripes to officiate the games.

Campbell doesn’t give much respect to Buffs and Wildcats in ‘17 grid mag

MARTIN COUNTY – Folks in Texas don’t need any extra reasons to discuss their love of football.

But coffee shops and water coolers will be all a-buzz with this year’s release of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

Over 1,400 high school football teams have been scouted and researched and the findings will elicit many different reactions from those same 1,400 teams.

Myrick competes for Angelo State in discus, hammer throw and javelin

SAN ANGELO - Mason Myrick, a 2014 graduate of Stanton High School and the son of Matt and Nora Myrick of Stanton, recently completed his junior year at Angelo State University where he is a member of the track and field team. He competed in the NCAA Division II championships at Bradenton, Fla., in May.

Teams, players, coaches honored at baseball league’s closing ceremonies

STANTON – Martin County Little League officials hosted the 2017 closing ceremonies on Monday evening at the Stanton High School baseball field. All participants from this year’s teams were recognized and given trophies and some even received superlative awards for hitting and pitching.

Grady’s Gibson wins back-to-back titles

COLLEGE STATION - Grady junior Dominic Gibson rolled to his second consecutive state championship last week at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.

Gibson defended his state title with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Slidell’s Stone Coston in the finals.

Short wins the state crown in shot put

AUSTIN – The best track athletes in the state converged on Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin on May 11-13 to attempt to have their names engraved in the Texas track and field history books.

Two athletes from Grady High School, senior Jaylen Short and sophomore Alyssa Lyon, were among the West Texans competing in the Class A.
