MANKATO, MN - Shirley Fay Stone, 75, was born Feb. 11, 1942, in Big Spring and died Apr. 28, 2017, at her residence in Mankato, MN. Memorial service is May 6 at First United Methodist Church in Stanton. A reception will follow immediately after the memorial service in the church. An intimate family service will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton. Her calling and passion in life was teaching. She worked in education for 35 years, primarily in the areas of Special Education and Adult Basic Education (ESL, GED). She loved her students, many of whom came to her for encouragement and prayer well beyond the classroom and their academic years. She graduated from Midland High School in 1960 and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from McMurry University in Abilene, where she was active in Gamma Sigma Sorority and was voted Junior Class Favorite in 1963 and crowned Reservation Princess in 1964. Later she received her Master’s degree from Tarleton State University in Stephenville She was a lifelong Methodist, active in church, singing in cantatas, especially fond of the sweet friendships formed in the Women’s Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church in Stanton. She was preceded in death by her parents Harrison and Ona Bickley. Survivors include her daughters Stacy Vanderwerf and husband Fred and Marci Welker and husband Chris; sister Marilyn Glaspie and husband Bud of Stanton and five grandchildren.
