WEST TEXAS - It clearly been a good and bad year in the cotton patch - a wet fall and early summer suggested a possible bumper crop for some but the end of summer was abnormally dry which stunted growth for others. One result is a late start for some gins while other have been off and running for a few weeks. Only two of the 10 gins the Martin County Messenger normally includes in the weekly bale count have anything yet to report while one was not available by press time. Stanton and Midland have not begun ginning but Stanton has started stacking up bales while Midland is currently having everything taken to Midkiff. Big Spring did not return calls. That leaves the gins at Tarzan, St. Lawrence , Midkiff, Flower Grove, Ackerly, Lomax and Knott reporting bale counts thus far. At Tarzan the count reached 4,752 bales this week, while at St. Lawrence 26,658 bales were counted. Over at Ackerly the total as of Wednesday was 10,334 bales and Midkiff was up to 9,327. Lomax reported an even 6,000 bales while Flower Grove ginned 4,111 bales and Knott 3,000.
