Vehicle theft ring exposed, one in custody following chase Wednesday

MARTIN COUNTY - The Martin County Sheriffs Office discovered a vehicle theft ring that has been operating inmultiple counties.

Law enforcement agencies in Mitchell, Dawson, Midland, Martin, Borden and Howard counties have been experiencing an unusually large amount of truck thefts.

Earlier this week, Martin County Sheriff’s Deputies found an abandoned stoeln vehicle in the Ackerly area.

The pik-up truck was stolen from Mitchell County, abandoned in Martin County where another truck was reported stolen.

Another stolen vehicle was recovered with a license plate that reference Dawson County even though the vehicle was not registered there.

Just this week, four more vehicle were recovered in Martin County and even more stolen.

Martin County deputies continue working with the other agencies and are developing several strong leads that are opening up potential suspects.

Then, Wednesday evening in Big Spring, law enforement caught a huge break when one of the stolen vehicles were spotted. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle the driver would not stop and attempted to evade police. During the pursuit, the driver of the pick-up went off road into a cotton field and was eventually surrounded and arrested without incident. Along with vehicles, the theives ahve apparently been stealing other property as the pick-up was full of stolen tools. The driver was not named at press time but resides in Lubbock.
