GARDEN CITY - The Grady varsity girls basketball team traveled to Garden City over the weekend and crushed the competition winning the Bearkat Klassic tournament.

Grady opened the tournament last Thursday with a decisive 36-29 win over Sterling City.

Raina Short had a game high 16 points.

Maddy Garza finished the game with six points and Haydn Burge also had six points. Sydney Gonzales scored five points and Jessi Everett had three.

Grady’s Thursday night game was a 56-29 beat down of Buena Vista.

Short led all scorers with 19 points while Garza added 10 and Everett chipped in with eight.

Burge tallied six points while Gonzales tossed in four. Ashley Hill posted a game of four points and Mercedes Jimenez and Sage McAnally rounded out the books with three and two points respectively.

On Friday, Grady cruised past Eldorado 26-19 to win its pool.

Short led Grady with 16 points followed by Garza with four, Gonzales four and Burge two.

Friday evening the Wildcats won their first bracket game, defeating Garden City 44-15.

Short and Garza were electric with 16 and 15 points respectively.

Everett finished with four, Burge three, Hill three, Jimenez two and Gonzales one.

In the championship match-up on Saturday, Grady downed #20 Hermleigh 45-36.

Short was outstanding with a game high 21 points.

Garza, Everett, and Burge each had six points for Grady while Gonzales added four and Jimenez scored two.

“The girls really improved over the course of the weekend. We really improved defensively and made some adjustments to defend some strong post players,” said Grady coach Jacinda Langen. “We also did a great job on the boards and out rebounded all of our opponents. Very proud of these young ladies and their effort.”

Short was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Burge made the all tournament team.
