MARTIN COUNTY - Law enforcement and volunteer firefighters and emergency services personnel worked 23 wrecks including one with a fatality here Wednesday as Martin County and some surrounding areas were hit with an ice storm.

That storm left a sheet of ice on area highways, and drivers were acting as if it was a balmy spring day rather than the dangerous conditions that kept ambulances and fire trucks hopping.

The biggest issues were on the interstate in both directions, with Midland County recording some 60 wrecks and Howard County another 40 or so as the area was all but shut down due to the slippery conditions.
