Grady destroys Bronte for first win

BRONTE – The Grady Wildcats booted the monkey off their backs with a 50-19 road victory over the Bronte Longhorns.

With the triumph, Grady moves its record to 1-3 on the year.

Bronte started the scoring midway through the first quarter with a five-yard touchdown run. Grady would answer four minutes later with a Caden Hayes one-yard touchdown run. Kody Cates added the point after attempt to give the Wildcats an 8-6 lead.

Bronte would regain the lead just eight second later with a 45-yard kickoff return for six points. The conversion attempt was good putting the Longhorns up 13-8 after the first quarter.

That would be the last time Grady’s defense allowed Bronte any meaningful points while the Wildcat’s offense had a fire lit under their tails.

Grady would score 42 straight points over the next two quarters for a 50-13 lead.

Hayes started the scoring exploits with a 33-yard touchdown reception from Cates. Isaiah Ontiveros would be the next to score with a one-yard touchdown run at the end of the first half. Cates added the PAT.

Grady’s next touchdown was a Hayes two-yard run and the next score was a Hunter McAnally 16-yard touchdown pass to Hayes. Cates converted both point after attempts.

Hayes would find the end zone two more times in the third quarter with runs of 44 and 25 yards.

With their foot off the gas, Bronte managed one more touchdown midway through the fourth quarter bringing the final score to 50-19.

“This victory means a lot. These kids needed this win,” stated Grady coach Chris Short. “They have worked hard and were very excited.”

Short attributes the Wildcats victory to “the best blocking we have had in two year.” Short also mention the team did a better job of tackling in the open field and that the team’s confidence is starting to grow.

Players of the game were Caden Hayes overall, Isaiah Ontiveros offense, Cooper Wallin defense, and Kody Cates special teams.

Hayes led the Wildcats passing attack with two completions for 68 yards, one touchdown and one interception. McAnally added another two completions for 23 yards, one touchdown, and one interception and Cates provided one completion for 18 yards.

Hayes was electric on the ground gaining 150 yards and scoring four touchdowns on 16 carries. Ontiveros pitched in with 53 yards and one touchdown and Cates contributed 20 yards rushing.

Cobe Cortez had the most yards receiving for Grady has his one reception covered 35 yards. Cates caught one pass for 33 yards and a touchdown and Ontiveros hauled in one pass for 18 yards.

Hayes caught one touchdown pass that covered 16 yards and Cooper Wallin recorded a reception for seven yards.

Defensively, McAnally and Hayes had the most tackles with 10 each while Cates and Walling racked up eight apiece.

Ontiveros finished the game with seven tackles followed by Cortez with six and Hunter Blaylock three.

Other defensive statistics had Wallin causing and recovering a fumble and McAnally recovered a fumble.
