Buffaloes stampede Braves, crush Eagles

STANTON – The Stanton varsity boy basketball teams destroyed Iraan and Grape Creek to wrap up the 2020 sports year.

On Dec. 18, Stanton gave Iraan a lecture in the finer aspects of basketball. By halftime Stanton had a 37-2 lead and after taking its foot off the gas coasted to a 60-19 victory.

Josh Hensley racked up a game high 11 points. Eddie Whittenbarger and Casey Buchanan tossed in eight points each and Arturo Salinas added seven.

Austin Hewtty and Tyler Benedict scored six points each while Hoyt Mims had four, Miguel Moreno four, and Nickoli Aguirre two.

On Dec. 29, a visiting Grape Creek fared better than most playing the Buffaloes but still fell by double digits.

By halftime Stanton had amassed a 29-8 lead and finished the game in cruise control for a 46-29 win.

Hensley and Benedict were Stanton’s top scorers with 16 and 14 points respectively.

Hewtty and Aguirre added four points each while Moreno and Aiden Galaviz pitched in with three points apiece. Buchanan closed the books with two points.

Next on the schedule for Stanton is a home contest with district rival Coahoma on Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
