Stanton wraps up basketball season

STANTON - Stanton’s sub varsity basketball teams wrapped up the basketball seasons on Tuesday.

The junior varsity beat Anson last Friday in electric fashion.

After falling behind 13-9, Stanton rallied to take a 24-23 lead.

With eight minutes left, the two teams traded baskets but Stanton hit the final shot for a 29-28 victory.

Nickoli Aguirre led Stanton in scoring with nine points and Arturo Salinas added eight.

Max Lopez pitched in with five points followed by Hoyt Mims with three, Eddie Wittenbarger two, and Miguel Moreno two.

Stanton’s final game was a tough contest with Colorado City on Tuesday.

The Wolves jumped out to a 19-5 lead and had a 33-17 advantage at halftime.

Things didn’t get easier in the second half and C-City eventually won the game 46-28.

Lopez was high point for Stanton with 11 points and Aguirre had nine.

Salinas and Wittenbarger tossed in three points each and Moreno had the final two points.

Stanton’s freshman team was also in action Tuesday night against the Garden City Bearkat’s junior varsity.

Garden City came out of the gates blazing for an 11-6 lead after the first quarter.

Stanton chipped away throughout the second quarter to train 17-13 at halftime.

The Buffs offense exploded in the third frame and took control of the game with a slim 22-20 lead.

The momentum was short lived as Garden City rallied for a 30-26 win.

Galaviz led the Buffs with six points and Armendarez and Villa added five each.

Rivera scored four points and Andler, Tavarez, and Hinojosa ended the game with two points apiece.
