Stanton handles Lamesa, prepares for Grape Creek

STANTON - The Stanton Buffaloes were impressive in the first live action scrimmage of the season against Lamesa last Thursday in Stanton.

The offense moved the ball easily and managed to over a couple mental mistakes late in the drive to still score a touchdown.

“I thought we did a great job of executing our offense, we are far ahead of last year in that area,” said Stanton coah Cody Hogan. “It helps a lot being in the second year of our offense, we're getting to work on the details of the plays and not having to do as much explaining the major parts of them. We’re still working on adding a few wrinkles to the offense, we just have to continue learning at the pace we’ve been through the first three weeks.”

Defensively, the Buffs did an excellent job except for one blown play that allowed for a 70 yard touchdown. Subtrac the outlier and Lamesa only had less than a hand full of first downs.

“We did a very good job tackling in the scrimmage and playing our own assignment instead of trying to do someone else's job,” stated Hogan.

The Buffaloes will open the regular season at home this Friday against Grape Creek.

“The team's focus on this first game is good. The kids were telling me what I was about to say while we were teaching in practice today,” said Hogan. “They spent enough time watching film that they were talking to me about the same tendencies that we saw.”

Stanton’s game plan for Friday is to be more physical on the line than Grape Creek. Both teams boast a run heavy offense and the victory could boil down to which team controls the line of scrimmage.
