Coahoma sneaks past district rival Stanton 20-16

COAHOMA – The Coahoma Bulldogs scored the only touchdown in the second half to overtake the Stanton Buffaloes for its first win in District 4-3A Division II play on Friday at Bill Easterling Memorial Stadium in Coahoma.

Coahoma put the first points on the scoreboard with a Brysen Kerby 10- yard touchdown run. Stanton answered with an Evan Cox 21-yard touchdown run followed by an Adrian De La O conversion run for an 8-6 lead.

The Bulldogs would retake the lead early in the second quarter when Kerby broke off a 74-yard run. Kerby also added the twopoint conversion.

Stanton would again answer with a Colby Carson two-yard run. Rene Samora caught the two-point conversion pass from Tyler Benedict for a 16-14 halftime lead.

Coahoma continued it pee-wee football coaching strategy of giving the football to its best player on practically every down, as Kerby scored the last touchdown of the game on a two-yard run for a 20-16 victory.

Stanton coach Cody Hogan said a tough second half and a lack of execution for his offense cost his team the victory.

Hogan said he was pleased with his defense.

“The defense made a lot of stops and forced some fumbles,” Hogan said. “The kids did a good job of attacking the ball. Our offense was good in the first half, but it wasn’t in the second half.”

Stanton’s offensive leaders were Benedict, De La O, and Hoyt Mims.

Benedict finished 3 of 9 for 43 yards passing, De La O totaled 63 yards rushing on 14 carries, and Mims had one reception for 22 yards.

Other rushing stats had Cox with 33 yards, Benedict 32 yards, Miguel Moreno five yards, Austin Hewtty four yards, and Hoyt Mims three yards.

Stanton’s other two completions went to Cox and Samora for 18 and three yards respectively.

Defensively, Eddie Wittenbarger led the Buffaloes with 15 tackles and Samora broke double digit take downs with 10.

De La O, Moreno, and Mims racked up nine tackles each followed by Cox with eight, Benedict six, Ashton Smith six, and Ryllan Martinez five.

Roberto Perez and Marco Armendarez tallied four tackles each while Carson, Hewtty, Marcus DeLeon, and Payden Alberts recorded two tackles each.

The Buffaloes fall to 2-5 and 0-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improved to 5-1 and 1-1.

The Buffaloes will get ready for another tough challenge when they host No. 8-ranked Idalou (5-0, 2-0).

“The offense has got to put together some drives to keep their offense off the field,” Hogan said. “Our offense needs to stay on the field.”

The other two district match-ups this week have Coahoma visiting Reagan County and Abernathy hosting Lubbock Roosevelt.

Last week Abernathy was destroyed by Idalou 42-14 and Lubbock Roosevelt crushed Reagan County 57-0.

There will be a pep rally tonight at 8 p.m. in Buffalo Stadium.
