MEADOW – The Stanton High School basketball teams were in Meadow Tuesday night for a non-district game against the Broncos.
The junior varsity girls started the night strong for Stanton with double digit victory.
Stanton took an early 14-6 lead by halftime and rolled to a 31-14 win.
Shelby Phillips led Stanton with a game high nine points. A. Ramos and H. Stalvey scored five points each and A. Villa added four.
B. Fischer ended the game with three points followed by K. Jefferson with two, S. Hensley two, and C. Fisher one.
The junior varsity boys kept the sweep possibility alive with an overtime victory.
Stanton started the game really slow falling behind 16-6 after the first quarter. The Buffs played better then next eight minutes but still trailed 23-20 at halftime.
The Buffs continued to chip away at the Bronco’s lead cutting the advantage to 28-27 after the third quarter and eventually tied the game at 35-35 at the end of regulation.
The extra four minutes allowed Stanton to inch ahead for the 41-38 victory.
Buchanan led the Buffs with 21 points and Armendarez added 12 points.
Holly knocked down a three pointer while Haas, Booth, and Edmunson chipped in with two points each.
The varsity Lady Buffs had no trouble with Meadow giving Stanton it’s third win of the night.
An outstanding first quarter earned the Lady Buffs a 20-2 advantage. Stanton continued to pour in the points for a 49-23 victory.
Gaby Rodriguez finished with a game high 14 points and Sydney Harris added 10.
Sarah Denson, Shelby Phillips, and Zoe Ruiz tossed in five points each and Victoria Solorzano chipped in with four. A. Gonzales, Natalie Taylor and Halie Vera Cruz posted two points each in the books.
It was all up to the varsity boys to finish the job and complete the sweep. By the slimmest of margins, the Buffs beat Meadow to sweep all four games.
The two teams were neck-and-neck all night with Stanton trailing by one point at halftime. At the end of the third quarter Stanton till trailed by one point.
It looked as if Meadow would be able to pull out the victory but two big three pointers by Aidan Galaviz propelled the Buffs to a 42-41 victory.
Nine different players contributed points in the win.
Max Lopez and Josh Hensley led the charge with eight points each and Arturo Salinas added seven.
Galaviz finished with six points followed by Austin Hewtty with five, Migeul Moreno three, Alex Flores two, Nickoli Aguirre two, and Eddie Wittenbarger one.
