Buffaloes go to battle with Yellowjackets

STANTON – The Stanton basketball teams were in Kermit on Friday looking to swat the Yelowjackets.

The varsity Buffs started strong with a 12-6 first quarter but Kermit exploded for 21 points in the second quarter for a 27-16 halftime.

The two teams were virtually even over the span of the second half with Kermit making one more basket than Stanton bringing the final score to 53-40.

Josh Hensley led Stanton with 13 points and Arturo Salinas added 12 points.

Casey Buchanan scored six points for the Buffs while Aidan Galaviz added three, Austin Hewtty had three, Eddie Wittenbarger chipped in two, and Miguel Moreno tossed in one point.

Stanton’s varsity girls had one of their strongest performances of the season.

The Lady Buffs jumped out to a staggering 11-1 lead before closing out the first half up 25-7.

The two teams were neck and neck throughout the second half but Stanton still managed the lopsided 48-29 victory.

Gaby Rodriguez finished with a game high 13 points and Shelby Harries added 10.

Victoria Solorzano ended the game with eight points while Mariah Brooks and Halie Vera Cruz scored six points each.

Zoe Ruiz rounded out the books with five points.

The junior varsity girls game was a battle from start to finish.

Stanton took a slim two point lead after the quarter and stretched it to seven points by halftime.

Kermit chipped away at the lead over the third quarter and came buzzing back in the fourth for a 24-22 win.

A. Ramos led the Buffs with seven points followed by S. Hensley with five, C. Fischer four, B. Fischer three and K. Jefferson three.

Stanton’s junior varsity boys went up against a talented Kermit team that was on fire.

The Yellowjackets scored 22 points in the first quarter for a sizeable lead and continued to pour on the offense for a 65-31 win.

Buchanan led the Buffs with 11 points and Armendarez added five.

Anderson and Edmunson scored four points each while Haas, Alvizao, and Ramirez tossed in two points each.

The final game of the night was a ninth grade match-up.

Stanton and Kermit mirrored each other in the first quarter playing to a 7-7 tie but Stanton built a slim 18-15 halftime advantage.

Third quarter action had Stanton adding one more point to its lead but Kermit exploded in the final quarter, hitting three three-pointers to edge the Buffs at the buzzer 35-30.

J. Galindo scored a team high 18 points to lead Stanton.

M. Marquez finished the game with six points and C. Tavarez and D. Wickler scored three points each.

Next on the schedule for Stanton are home games on Friday against Iraan.

The junior varsity girls are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. followed by the varsity girls at 2:30 p.m. and finally the varsity boys will play at 4 p.m.

This will be the final game before Christmas for all teams with the next game slated for Dec. 29 against Grape Creek.
