GARDEN CITY – It’s a good thing Garden City crowned its homecoming queen before the game since the contest with Marfa on Friday ended at halftime due to 45-point mercy rule.
The Bearkats were in high gear from the first whistle to the final buzzer.
The first touchdown of the game happed after just 15 seconds when John Lopez ran the ball from 18 yards out. He added the conversion kick for an 8-0 lead.
On the Bearkats next possession, Sebastian Balzacar found a big hole and went 40 yards for a touchdown. Lopez added the kick for a 16-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, Logan Seidenberger completed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Owen Seidenberger. Lopez converted the kick and in less than half a quarter, Garden City led 24-0.
The scoring explosion continued on the next Garden City possession as Denton Roe threw a nine-yard dart to Jim Kinnibrugh. Lopez added the kick to push the Garden City lead to 32-0.
Garden City would get the ball right back following an interception and would score immediately with a Seidenberger one-yard pass to Keith Latch.
Seidenberger would end the first quarter with his third touchdown pass, this time a 67-yard bomb to Lopez. Brock Braden added the conversion kick for a 46-0 lead.
Jordan Jones would score twice in the second quarter for Garden City making the final score 58-0. His first touchdown was a 29-yard run and his second was a 22-yard touchdown reception thrown by Seidenberger.
The Bearkat’s offense racked up 274 yards while their defense allowed just 37 yards, two first downs, and had two interceptions.
Seidenberger led the offense with four completions for 136 yards and four touchdowns. Roe added one completion for nine yards and a touchdown.
A quartet of Bearkats took care of the rushing duties led by Balcazar with 57 yards followed by Jones with 45, Roe 21, and Lopez 18.
Lopez was the leading receiver with one catch for 67 yards. Owen Seidenberger ended the game with one catch for 46 yards and Jones had one catch for 22 yards.
Kinnibrugh and Latch rounded out the receptions with one catch each for nine and one yard respectively.
Leading the defense with five tackles was Roe followed by O. Seidenberger with four.
Lopez, Balcazar, Mason Walker, Jones, Alejandro Talamantes, and Brock Braden recorded two tackles each while Latch and Walton Marshall added one each.
Garden City opens the District 6-A season at home against Midland TLCA this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
