Garden City kicks off basketball seasons with losses to O’Donnell, Stanton

O’DONNELL – Basketball season has begun for Garden City with the varsity traveling to O’Donnell last week and the junior varsity playing in Stanton on Tuesday.

After falling behind early, Garden City’s varsity mounted a feverish rally at the end of the game against O’Donnell but came up just short as the final buzzer sounded.

The Bearkat’s were the slightly better team throughout the first half taking a 24-21 halftime lead. O’Donnell chipped away at that lead in the third quarter and the Eagles eventually found themselves up 38-34.

Garden City’s offense came to life again in the fourth quarter but couldn’t muster enough points to overcome the deficit and fell to O’Donnell 51-50.

Walker had a game high 22 points and Seidenberger added 10. Lopez tossed in nine points followed by Talamantes with five, Gass two, and Roe two.

The junior varsity Bearkats were up and down against Stanton. The Buffaloes took a 10-8 lead after the first quarter and the Garden City’s offense went silent for two quarters allowing Stanton a 28-8 lead.

The Bearkats offense was finally revived in the fourth quarter but it was too late as Stanton won 36-17.

Dehlinger led Garden City with seven points and Easterling and Lopez had five points each.

Garden City will host the Booster Club Classic next weekend with games starting on Thursday and wrapping up on Saturday.
