MILES – Grady’s varsity girls basketball team was very efficient this past week earning a spot in the championship game of the Miles Tournament.
Grady opened with a decisive 29-20 victory over tourney host Miles.
“In what seemed to be a defensive battle where scoring didn’t come easy. The third quarter proved to be the difference as we were able to get some breathing room going to the fourth quarter,” said Grady coach Jym Dennis. “I thought we were very patient on the offensive end of the floor. We took our time and got good quality shots.”
Sydney Gonzales finished with a game high 11 points and Jessi Everett added seven.
Samantha Griffin tossed in five points followed by Mercedes Jimenez with four and Skye Shock had two.
Grady advanced to the second round where is dominated Bronte on both ends of the floor.
Despite a slow start, the Wildcats erupted offensively in the final 16 minutes for a 62-36 win.
Everett was electric scoring 25 points and Gonzales added 12.
Griffin and Delaney Saunders had six points each while Emma Parker scored four and Tatum North had three points.
Shock, Selig Burge, and Jimenez rounded out the books with two points each.
Grady would then battle Irion County for the championship.
The Wildcats were not awake in the first quarter making several mistakes on offense and defense and allowed Irion County a 17-5 lead. and play good basketball over the final three quarters to cut the lead to four points. That’s as close as Grady would get a the final buzzer ended the game with Grady down 41-34.
“I am proud of the girls. I feel like we got better in these three games. They are working hard and trying to do everything I ask of them,” said Dennis.
Gonzales and Shock led Grady with eight points each and Saunders tossed in seven.
Griffin scored five followed by Everett with three, North two, and Jimenez one.
Grady will travel to Garden City to play in the Bearkat Booster Klassic.
The Wildcats will open the tournament on Thursday at 9:40 against Sterling City. Grady will play a second game on Thursday at 1:40 pm against Buena Vista.
