GRADY – Grady’s junior high boys basketball teams split the two games played on Monday with Garden City and the junior high girls won a close contest over Garden City seventh.
The Wildcats A team used a 20-3 run to take a commanding lead and cruised in the second half for a 35-17 victory.
Kyler Cox was high point with 10 followed by Charles Deatherage and Cal McMorries with six points each.
Idian Gallegos posted five points while Braxton Dillard scored four and Camden Wiebe and Knight Durham added two points each.
“We had a lot of intensity out of the gate. Turned the ball over in stretches but the Wildcats competed for four quarters,” said Grady coach Brett Glaze. “Kyler Cox was big for us and our posts played big for us.”
The win improves Grady to 2-2 on the season.
The Wildcats B team also had a good game, but Garden City was a few buckets better.
The Bearkats built a 13-8 halftime lead and tacked on a couple more to end the game 26-20.
Lane Cearley finished with 10 points for Grady followed by Logan Rodriguez with eight and Karson Ledford added two points.
“Kids played hard and competed at a high level the whole game,” stated Glaze. “It was the first game of the year for these guys and it looks like we are headed in the right direction.”
Grady is 0-1 on the season.
In the junior high girl’s game, the two teams were neckand-neck in the first half with Garden City taking a small 11-9 lead.
Grady exploded in the third quarter to take a 17-12 lead and held on in the fourth quarter for a 21-14 victory.
“The girls did a great job of handling their press,” said Grady coach Jym Dennis. “We ended up getting some easy baskets out of our press break. Defensively we are playing hard.”
Amaia Najera led Grady with eight points and Brynlee Madison added six points. Raegan Dennis and Macie Stack added five and two points respectively.
Grady improved to 2-3 on the season.
