HIGHLAND – Garden City’s varsity girls basketball team has put in tons of work and is ready for the effort to turn into wins on the scoreboard.
The lady Bearkats were in action at the Highland Hilltop Classic last week. The Bearkat’s tournament record was 1-4, but three of those losses were by a single field goal.
Garden City struggled in its opener against Jayton and falling behind early and eventually losing 54-28
Bailey Dehlinger led the Bearkats with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Kelsey Gully tossed in nine points followed by Shelby Braden five, Amber Schwartz three, and Jasmine Jackson one.
Braden also grabbed seven boards while Bri Halfmann and Ella Braden corralled three rebounds each.
S. Braden led the team in assist with three and E. Braden had two.
In its second game, Garden City looked good on both ends of the floor but came up just short losing to Roby 51-49.
Dehlinger and S. Braden had double digits points of 12 and 11 respectively.
Schwartz had seven points followed by Halfmann with six, Gully six, Barbara Wittrein four, and E. Braden three.
Halfmann and Dehlinger led the team in rebounds with seven and six respectively and Schwartz and Gully added five each.
Gully was the top thief with four steals and Gully and E. Braden had the most assists with three and two respectively.
Garden City would get its lone victory in game three with a 52-39 performance over Ira.
Dehlinger posted a video game stat line of 20 points, 16 rebounds, and four steals.
Halfmann also had a nice line of 10 points and nine boards and Gully added seven points, one rebound, three steals, and five assists.
Also scoring for Garden City were Wittrein with five points, Schwartz four, E. Braden three, Jacksin two, and S. Braden one.
S. Braden and Wittrein added six rebounds and three steals apiece.
Next up was Class 2A Hawley and Garden City lost a thriller in overtime 67-64.
Four Bearkats finished in double digits led by Gully with seven three-pointers and 23 points. Dehlinger added 11 points, Schwartz had 10, and Halfmann had 10.
S. Braden and Wittrein rounded out the score books with eight and two points respectively.
Dehlinger was queen of the boards with 12 and Halfmann pulled down nine. Dehlinger also had two steals and S. Braden tallied one.
Gullly and E. Braden recorded four assists each.
The final game of the weekend was another nail biter. Water Valley clipped Garden City 45-43.
Dehlingerled the Bearkats with 15 points and six rebounds while Halfmann added eight points and four rebounds and S. Braden added six points and six rebounds.
Wittrein ended the game with four points and four rebounds followed by Schwartz with four points and three reounds.
Gully tossed in three points and grabbed five boards and Elissa Colunga scored three points and had one rebound.
S. Braden led Garden Cith with three steals and Wittrein, Gully, and Colunga had two each.
Gully had the most assists with three while Dehlinger, Schwartz, and Colunga had two apiece.
Garden City opens the Bearkat Booster Klassic on Thursday against Compass at 6:10 pm.
